And so, will the craven little things known as Republican congressman and Senators just cave-in on this so as not to seem obstructionist? Or will they actually evaluate the plan, and vote on it based on its merits? Oh, and will all of you who “lay awake at night wondering if your next paycheck is enough to cover next month’s bills,” please raise your hands”? And would those of who support creating 2.5 million new Federal construction jobs, please your hands. “No negotiation”? Does this mean he’s going to use some kind of force to implement his decrees?

It has long intrigued me why the German people supported Adolf Hitler and his Nazi regime. After all, every schoolchild in America is taught that Hitler and his Nazi cohorts were the very epitome of evil. How could ordinary German citizens support people who were so obviously monstrous in nature?

Among the major factors that motivated Germans to support Hitler during the 1930s was the tremendous economic crisis known as the Great Depression, which had struck Germany as hard as it had the United States and other parts of the world. What did many Germans do in response to the Great Depression? They did the same thing that many Americans did — they looked for a strong leader to get them out of the economic crisis.

In fact, there is a remarkable similarity between the economic policies that Hitler implemented and those that Franklin Roosevelt enacted. Keep in mind, first of all, that the German National Socialists were strong believers in Social Security, which Roosevelt introduced to the United States as part of his New Deal. Keep in mind also that the Nazis were strong believers in such other socialist schemes as public (i.e., government) schooling and national health care. In fact, my hunch is that very few Americans realize that Social Security, public schooling, Medicare, and Universal Healthcare all have their ideological roots in Nazism.

That a nation oppressed by economic fear would respond to Hitler as Americans did to F.D.R. is not surprising.
One of Hitler’s proudest accomplishments was the construction of the national autobahn system,

Obama Announces Public Works Plan To Fix “Crisis” - Highways And Bridges:

WASHINGTON – President-elect Barack Obama promoted an economic plan Saturday he said would create 2.5 million jobs by rebuilding roads and bridges and modernizing schools.

“We’ll put people back to work rebuilding our crumbling roads and bridges, modernizing schools that are failing our children, and building wind farms and solar panels,” Obama said.

Obama claimed the country is “facing an economic crisis of historic proportions” and `We must do more to put people back to work.” The goal is to force the plan quickly through Congress, after Obama takes office Jan. 20. “I’ll be welcome to ideas and suggestions from both sides of the aisle,” he said. “But what is not negotiable is the need for immediate action.”

People “are lying awake at night wondering if next week’s paycheck will cover next month’s bills,” if their jobs will remain, if their retirement savings will disappear, he added.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said congressional Democrats will “continue pushing for aggressive but necessary measures. Part of that is passing a substantial economic recovery package, like the one President-elect Obama discussed this morning, that creates good-paying jobs here in America and stabilizes a volatile market.”

In a slap at President George W. Bush, Reid added, “We will soon finally have a leader and partner in the White House who recognizes the urgency with which we must turn around our economy, and I look forward to working with him and the new Congress to do so.”

The plan, which envisions those new jobs by January 2011, is “big enough to meet the challenges we face,” he said. The president-elect said he has asked his economic advisers to flesh out the plan — one “big enough to meet the challenges we face. ... We’ll be working out the details in the weeks ahead, but it will be a two-year, nationwide effort to jump-start job creation in America and lay the foundation for a strong and growing economy.”

Nonetheless, he said, “There are no quick or easy fixes to this crisis, which has been many years in the making, and it’s likely to get worse before it gets better.”

He also made commitments to force the auto industry to produce more fuel-efficient cars and the energy industry to develp alternative energy technologies.

Hitler was a strong believer in national service, especially for German young people. That was what the Hitler Youth was all about — inculcating in young people the notion that they owed a duty to devote at least part of their lives to society. It was an idea also resonating in the collectivist atmosphere that was permeating the United States during the 1930s.
