29 years ago I was 17 years old, a senior in a high school I hated, playing hooky as usual, smoking dope, and drinking beer, in my living room with everyone else gone out of the house when Sam Donaldson came on…

It all ended 444 days later…the day after Ronnie saddled up.

I have long since quit my self-destructive ways, but Iran sure hasn’t.

From IHT:

TEHRAN: Thousands of Iranians demonstrated Monday to celebrate the 29th anniversary of the takeover of the U.S. Embassy by militant students, Iranian state television reported.

Crowds gathered outside the former embassy building to demonstrate on a day that was declared a school holiday so that children could be bused into the capital to take part.

In 1979, militant Iranian students who accused the U.S. Embassy of plotting against Tehran seized 52 Americans and held them for 444 days. The United States severed diplomatic ties in 1980, and the two countries have not had formal relations since.

Washington has said that it might consider opening a U.S. interests section in Tehran, which would mean sending diplomats there.

With the United States voting Tuesday for a new president, and relations with Iran having emerged as a subject of debate in that campaign, many of those who demonstrated outside the former embassy wondered if a thaw lay ahead.

Debate over ties with the United States has increased in Iran before its own presidential election, scheduled for June. Critics say that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has isolated Iran with his fiery speeches against Washington and the West. But Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, said last week that the country’s hatred for the United States ran deep and that differences between the two went beyond a “few political issues.”

The CIA helped topple the elected government of Mohammed Mossadegh in the 1950s, and the United States openly supported Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, who was ousted early in 1979. The embassy was seized months later after President Jimmy Carter allowed the deposed shah into the United States for medical treatment. Iranians also condemn Washington for having armed and supported Saddam Hussein during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war.

In 2002, President George W. Bush labeled Iran part of his Axis of Evil, a move that angered Tehran, particularly after it helped in the U.S.-led war to topple the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Oh fuck you, Islamic Republic of Iran. Your days are finally coming to an end.
