SEOUL: North Korea Saturday verbally attacked the United States and South Korea over an imminent massive joint military exercise, threatening to take “countermeasures”.
South Korea and the US will kick off a week-long joint military landing exercise on Monday involving more than 8,000 Marines and scores of vessels and aircraft.
The drill in the southeastern port of Pohang will involve 6,000 Korean Marines and 2,000 US Marines from a unit based on Okinawa in Japan.
The Secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland (CPRF) said the exercise is “an open military threat” to the communist state and “an intolerable criminal act”.
It also said it pushes the Korean peninsula “to the brink of a nuclear war.”
“Due to the warmongers’ reckless confrontation and war moves… a military conflict and an all-out war may break out any moment,” the semi-official agency in charge of inter-Korean affairs said in a statement.
“The DPRK (North Korea) will take resolute countermeasures to mercilessly punish provocateurs,” CPRF was quoted as saying by Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency.
On Tuesday, North Korea, angry at a leaflet campaign by Seoul groups urging the overthrow of its leader, accused South Korea of planning a pre-emptive military strike and threatened to reduce it to “debris” in retaliation.
The 1.1-million-strong North Korean military faces some 670,000 South Korean troops and 28,500 US troops stationed in the South.
The US fought for the South during the 1950-53 war and has deployed troops in the country ever since.
