Centurions were the backbone of the Roman army, waging war, keeping the peace and issuing executive orders. They commanded a lot of power. They enforced rule over Israel during the occupation. What happens when a centurion and Jesus meet?
Matthew 8:5-13
When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help.
“Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering.”
Jesus said to him, “I will go and heal him.”
The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, “I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.
I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.
But many subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! It will be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that very hour.

Counter-Revolution
God’s Soldiers: Adventure, Politics, Intrigue, and Power – A History of the Jesuits.
“Much more so than other religious groups, like Franciscans or Dominicans, the Jesuits have inspired awe, hatred, and jealousy  not merely among Protestants, but also among fellow Catholics!
Many people assume that the Jesuits were created in response to the Protestant Reformation, but that isn’t true. They would have been created anyway, but the Reformation meant that they immediately had a grand purpose and provided the Catholic hierarchy with a new, vibrant tool just when they needed one. The Jesuits were at the right place at the right time, which makes their association with the Counter-Reformation understandable. It also explains their dramatic growth, and that growth is the cause for the jealousy on the part of other Catholics. This led to their formal suppression by the pope in 1773, although enough survived that they could be re-established in the following century.
Protestants were suspicious of the Jesuits and their actions. Jesuits were thought to be deeply involved in political intrigue and plots to overthrow Protestant governments. Jesuits traveled under false identities and acted to inspire the continuing faith of Catholic communities within Protestant territory. Jesuits also promoted those aspects of Catholicism that outraged Protestants the most  the robes of priests, the Mass, veneration of Mary, and so forth. Jesuits thus became the embodiment of everything hated about Catholicism, one that the Protestants could do something about when they captured a Jesuit in their midst and made a martyr out of him.
The Jesuits’ actions alternatively fascinate and repel.
“Whether loved or loathed, the Society of Jesus could never be ignored. It would disrupt the certainties and hierarchies of the Catholic Church, transform the intellectual, cultural, and devotional landscapes of Europe, and meddle in successive controversies of reformation, empire building, enlightenment, and revolution. …Both the hagiographies and the black legends are hopelessly misleading. There have been good Jesuits and bad Jesuits, otherworldly innocents and ambitious political schemers.â€ÂÂ
The myths and tall tales about the Jesuits are just as much a part of their history as the truth is, and oddly, just as much a part of who they really are, as the truth is.
Disentangling myth from reality is thus exceedingly difficult – and perhaps undesirable.”

The Jesuits are known as God’s Soldiers.
Ignatius Loyola founded the Jesuits (the Society of Jesus). The Jesuits were one of the major spearheads of the Counter-Reformation. The work done by Ignatius Loyola was seen as an important counter to Martin Luther and John Calvin, and in many parts of Europe their aggressive and coordinated actions stopped the growth of Protestantism entirely.
Ignatius Loyola was born in 1491 into a wealthy noble family. He was educated as a knight. Like many young men from his background, Loyola joined the army. In May 1521, he was wounded badly by a cannonball at the Battle of Pamplona while fighting against France. The wound plagued him for the rest of his life.
While Loyola recovered from his wounds he underwent a spiritual conversion. After reading about the lives of the Saints and of Christ, Loyola concluded that his life had been a sham and he decided to reform it. After claiming to have seen a vision of the Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus he went to the shrine of Our Lady at Montserrat in Aragon and became a hermit living in a cave near Mantua in 1522. He spent his time in rags confessing and scourging himself whilst helping the sick. “I will follow like a puppy dog if I can only find a way to salvation.” Loyola threw himself at the mercy of God. He devoted hours each day to prayer and when he was not doing this he tended to the sick and poor.
…Loyola’s companions, given the sarcastic name “Jesuits” by their opponents, organized themselves on military lines with a military love for a clear chain of command, as their founding document attests. The Jesuit is to “serve as a soldier of God.
Ignatius Loyola came to realize with particular clarity, this position is either true or insane: Only moral cowardice or intellectual muddle can make room for a middle ground.

No. 1 Tide will face No. 2 Gators for SEC title
NEW YORK (AP) – To earn a national championship, Alabama or Florida will have to win two games matching No. 1 vs. No. 2. The top-ranked Crimson Tide and second-ranked Gators held their spots in the AP Top 25 Sunday, setting up the 41st game matching the highest ranked teams in the AP Top 25.
Alabama (12-0) and Florida (11-1) will play Saturday at the Georgia Dome in the Southeastern Conference title game. The winner is virtually guaranteed a spot in the BCS national championship game in Miami on Jan. 8.
No. 3 Texas slipped past No. 4 Oklahoma in the latest rankings, a week after the Sooners had jumped over the Longhorns.
The Crimson Tide received 62 first-place votes and 1,620 points from the media panel. The Gators received three first-place votes, up one from last week, and 1,516 points.
Texas had 1,488 points, eight more than Oklahoma.
There was little movement throughout the poll after a weekend when most ranked teams either won and were off.
No. 5 Southern California and No. 6 Penn State held their spots. No. 7 Utah jumped a spot ahead of No. 8 Texas Tech, after the Red Raiders had to rally to beat Baylor 35-28 at home.
No. 9 and unbeaten Boise State and Ohio State round out the top 10.
The 1 vs. 2 matchup in Atlanta will be the fourth in which Alabama has been involved, but the first not played in a bowl game and the first in which the Tide will be No. 1. The Tide are 2-1 in games matching the top two teams in the AP poll.
Florida has also appeared three times in a 1 vs. 2 matchup, going 2-1.
In 1 vs. 2 games, the top-ranked team is 23-15-2.
