Wired: Security contractors: Worried the Iraq security pact may cramp your style? Anxiously watching the feds go after the Blackwater shooters? Well, there’s still work for you… in Afghanistan.

According to a solicitation updated today, the government is looking to hire armed guards to protect installations in southern Afghanistan. The announcement says hired guns are needed to work in the provinces of Farah, Nimroz, Helmand, Kandahar, Zabul, Uruzgan, and Day Kundi.
But these guys wont just be glorified warzone rent-a-cops. Tasks will include “conducting surveillance and counter-surveillance” and “employing the appropriate force to neutralize any threat,” the solicitation says.

Detecting, identifying, reporting, and guarding against threats related to unauthorized personnel, contraband, and instruments of damage, destruction, and information collection from entering the installation through the Entry Control Points (ECPs); conducting surveillance and counter-surveillance of the installation perimeter and vicinity from designated Perimeter Defensive Positions (PDPs) in order to prevent unauthorized personnel from gathering information or illegally entering the installation; employing the appropriate force to neutralize any threat from unauthorized individuals illegally attempting to enter the installation with the intent to harm personnel or damage facilities and equipment.

This, however, is a strictly BYO AK-47 affair. According to the solicitation, the U.S. Government “will not provide any weapons or ammunition to contractors, their subcontractors, or any employees of the same.”
