Governor Threatened To Withhold State Funds From Paper If It Didn’t Fire His Critics

Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich was charged Tuesday with illegally threatening to withhold state assistance to Tribune Co., the owner of the Chicago Tribune, in the sale of Wrigley Field, according to the federal criminal complaint. In return for state assistance, Blagojevich allegedly wanted members of the paper’s editorial board who had been critical of him fired.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich said today he didn’t view it as surprising that Tribune Co. filed for protection under the federal bankruptcy code and said he believed one part of the reorganizing process should be to change the Chicago Tribune’s editorial board, which has repeatedly criticized the Democratic chief executive…
