BAGHDAD — The director of an orphanage in Tikrit says she must remove the shoe sculpture set up to honor the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at former U.S. President George W. Bush.

Fatin al-Nassiri says Iraqi police told her the statue had to be removed because government property should not be used for something with a political bias.

She says the statue was taken down on Saturday.

A sofa-sized shoe statue was formally unveiled to the public Thursday in the hometown of the former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Baghdad-based artist Laith al-Amari described his fiberglass-and-copper work in Tikrit as a homage to the pride of the Iraqi people.

  1. OH MY GOSH they actually made a giant shoe statue?

They are so simple minded over there. Like an ant problem in the kitchen that needs to be taken care of… exception to all the good ants who appreciate the United States.

Hey, I supported this shoe statue the whole way. I mean for god’s sake, six years ago everyone in that orphanage would have been taken into the desert and shot for doing something like that. They don’t have to like the President, but the simple fact that there’s freedom of speech in that country now, and that someone could do this is pretty damn impressive. Although I have to agree with the Iraqi Government, on that Government Property shouldn’t be used for political bias.

And the fact that THIS is making the news papers shows how far we’ve come in a year. Plain and simple, we won and the Iraqis have better lives as a result.

The giant shoe will be replaced with a giant thimble, shoe, iron, tophat, or wheelbarrow.

  4. American Woman (bitter clinger to my guns and religion)

I guess they would have rather kept the statue of Saddam??
I agree it is good they now have freedom of speech but to throw a shoe at the man who gave it to you seems a bit ass backwards to me
