Imagine Bill Clinton giving a farewell address, and George W. Bush conspicuously going out to a restaurant and ignoring it. Imagine Eisenhower doing that to Truman. You can’t, because it such a gross act of full court media-covered disrespect, that it is nothing short of yelling “Fuck You” to George Bush through the nation’s living room televisions, and intentionally and knowingly doing it while the children are watching the screen. Just what kind of leadership by example is this?

Ah…wait…doesn’t our primary subject have a history of publicly flipping off his adversaries? Didn’t he do it to Hillary Clinton and John McCain? He could never take office having flipped-off George Bush with the same actual physical gesture that he’s so obsessed with hurling, like some code of conquest to those in-the-know (his ego being the primary audience), so he had to come up with a substitute. Do you really have trouble imagining him literally saying to himself, “How do I give my signature public flip-off to GW without being called on it, especially now that my opponents have noticed that I do this? I can’t get caught doing it, and give the enemy that ammo. Hmmm…I got it, when he gives that farewell speech….”.

What’s the point of my writing about this? The point is that I want every American citizen, every pundit, blogger, talking head, workplace warrior, and chow-time combatant to remember that this man holds the office of President of the United States in contempt, and he therefor needs to be held in contempt himself, from this moment forward. He is not to be treated above the manner in which he treats the office, or you, not only as a matter of principle, but as a practical matter of power, because to do so is to do so at your and your country’s peril. If he does not respect the office, then it means he intends to shred it, and shred the fabric of the country, if necessary, to achieve the satisfactions of ego that he is clearly so recklessly obsessed with. It is not a matter of “two wrongs don’t make a right”, of being better than him by continuing to show your respect for the office, it is a matter of defending the office against the assaults of a man who trashes it, and intends to reach for an undue, yet unrealized position above it. From this moment forward he has no right to enjoy any of the normal, base levels of deference held in reserve for the President of the United States, because that is an office he has abandoned before he even inherits it.
