NY Post editor defends cartoon; knocks Sharpton

The New York Post is defending its cartoon today by Sean Delonas where a police officer shoots a chimp — playing off the rampaging Travis — with one cop saying: “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

The cartoon quickly sparked a controversy, with Al Sharpton saying that it’s “troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys.”

Sharpton continued: “One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less than casual reference to this when in the cartoon they have police saying after shooting a chimpanzee that “Now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill.”

“Being that the stimulus bill has been the first legislative victory of President Barack Obama (the first African-American president) and has become synonymous with him it is not a reach to wonder are they inferring that a monkey wrote the last bill.”

But editor-in-chief Col Allan defended the cartoon, in a statement to Politico.

“The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington’s efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist.”

UPDATE: NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous released a statement: “NAACP continues to fight for a country where America’s promise can be realized for all and where racism Is just a tragic memory. We are saddened that the New York Post chose to create a symbol that is so divisive, insensitive and antithetical to that goal. The NY Post must do better.”

Well, I for one don’t equate black/african/negro/colored/ or what ever label I should use when discussing someone with dark pigmentation to their skin as being associated with a primate. I guess I need some cracker racist training from sharpton and his ilk so I can get my mind right and see and judge people by the color of their skin.

Or if I can address sharpton directly:
    “nigga please!”

While the cartoon does have the appearance of poor taste, perhaps the cartoonist was trying to make the point that the stimulus bill looks like it was written by a bunch of chimps stomping on a keyboard trying to rewrite the works of William Shakespeare. Can anyone else come up with another explanation of such a shitty barrel of pork?

Hey Al - it’s called Free Speech. AKA - our right say what may be stupid shit. The last time I read the constitution there was nothing in it about the right not to be offended. For that matter, FDR never mentioned “freedom from offensiveness” in his “Four Freedom’s” address.

Mind you - there is that damnnable “freedom from want”. Hey dead Liberal Demigod - the Demigods that came before you and brought forth on this land a new nation said it’s the “pursuit of Happiness” not the fucking Welfare-state “guarantee of happiness” that is our God-given right.

    Oh - but I digress . . . .

But the cartoon is funny as hell. It’s going on the fridge right next to the infamous New Yorker cover.

    Thinking of buying a subscription.
I think this proves even the liberals are starting to hate ob.

  5. Sharpton belongs in jail. Period.
He is a race baiting, anti-American black racist.
How’s that Al. Got you by your small gonads?

  6. Kentucky Jim

    1. Don’t show Al the book, “Curious Obama.”

    2. Good response by the editor, let’s see where common sense gets an editor these days.

    3. Maybe Sharpton will declare fatwa on the cartoonist.

    4. If I was a chimp and someone suggested the porkulus was written by chimps, I’d be insulted!

  7. grumpy mechanic

I don’t think the cartoon is racist or even directed at obambi,
he didn’t write the porkulus bill, the monkeys in congress did right?
Anyway, since when is against the law to be insensitive, ignorant and to believe things that others feel are racist?
Some erroneously believe that there is no God, it’s not illegal, it’s just ignorant.
Some call blacks niggers, it’s not illegal, it’s just insesitive.
Some people truly think another race is inferior, it’s not illegal, it’s just racism through ignorance.
Not all people have the same belief system, right?

  8. um, Obama didnt write the stimulus bill. this cant be about him. If it said “sign” instead, that would be one thing.. But I would still laugh… Freaking Sharpton, keeping racism alive since birth.

Al is just doing anything he can to stay relevant in the press. He and Jesse are both pretty much out of a job now that the offspring of a white mother and a black father has been installed as the first “black” ruler of America.

  10. Sully  Your pic says it all………

  11. Toe Tagger (Infidel in toto)

But it was OK to refer to Bush as a chimp? Hypocritical pieces of feces. President, please!

  12. German Dragon

First it was Bambi and Michelle “fist-bumping” in the Oval Office. Now it’s “Bambi-as-chimp” shot dead, with the obvious implication it’s because he’s pushing the country too far to the left with his spending plans.

I’d say that cartoon works well, and on so many levels. The NY Post certainly has the onions. I, too, would consider a subscription to their publication.

stupid cartonn, but the bill is dumb also
