I recently had a friend who forgot to set the brakes on his 18 wheeler. He went into the truck stop for a drink and when he came out the truck was gone. His first thought was that it was stolen, until he saw three drivers at the other end of the lot waving towards him. Boy did he feel like an ass.

I saw that happen once to a guy driving a red Ford Maverick into a Burger King parking lot. Amazingly, we were also in a red Ford Maverick. So we parked in his spot and went in to eat and watch his reaction when he returned. It was hilarious. He came out and was looking at the car over and over. He could tell something was different. It wasn’t his car! He later found his car up against a veterinary clinic next door.

I had a stick shift truck that I drove nearly into the ground from brand new. Occasionally it would pop out of gear in my driveway which was somewhat uphill. Wasn’t much of a big deal if I remembered to put the parking brake on which became habit. One night I was running into the house to grab something and then leave again. I pulled up into the driveway, pressed the parking brake, put it in reverse, shut the engine off and ran inside. When I got back to the truck (THANK GOD I was just stopping quickly and leaving again) it was in the middle of the street and there were people stopped in their cars going both directions. Just sitting there like, “This guy must be dumb for just sitting in the middle of the road.” Nobody got out, nobody bothered to see if the truck was running, they were just sitting there. I went back into the house, got a video camera and started to shoot from the front window to see how long it would take before someone got out. Instead, they sat there for ten minutes or so till they all just turned around and went in the direction they came from…. lol I would have been somewhat embarrassed had it not been for that. I called that my little sociology experiment…
