Paul Harvey, News Commentator and Talk-Show Pioneer , Dies at 90

Paul Harvey, a radio legend, has died at the age of 90, FOX News has confirmed.

ABC Radio Network spokesman Louis Adams said Harvey died Saturday at his winter home in Phoenix, Ariz., surrounded by family. No cause of death was immediately available.

Harvey, who was born and raised in Tulsa, Okla., was married to the late Lynne Cooper of St. Louis who died less than a year ago. They had one son, Paul Jr.

He was a news commentator and talk-show pioneer whose staccato style made him one of the country’s most familiar voices. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush in 2005.

Known for his resonant voice and trademark delivery of “The Rest of the Story,” Harvey had been heard nationally since 1951, when he began his “News and Comment” for ABC Radio Networks.

In a statement, ABC Radio Networks President Jim Robinson calls Harvey “one of the most gifted and beloved broadcasters in our nation’s history.”

He began his radio career in 1933 in Tulsa, while he was still in high school, his Web site said.

Paul Harvey News consisted of more than 1,200 radio stations and 400 Armed Forces Network stations that broadcast around the world and 300 newspapers, his biography reported.

A virus that weakened his vocal cord forced him off the air in 2001. But he returned to work in Chicago and was still active as he passed his 90th birthday.

God Bless Uncle Paul. I grew up listening to him on the radio in the morning ont he way to school and still enjoyed listening to him in my adult life.

I used to listen to him in the morning when my squad had dayroom cleanup duty. I used to crank him up on the radio that we had. Much to my surprise nobody ever objected.

    He was a legend.

I’ll miss him on the radio. Probably would have been banned by the new administration anyway.

… and THAT is the REST of the story.

    I will miss his broadcasts.

May God Rest Your Soul In Peace, Mr. Harvey.

I listened to Country music, Johnny Cash & Merle Haggard vinyl albums while in grammar school during the 1960’s.

Then in my Freshman year of High school, 1970, I found a semi-local AM country music station that aired Harvey’s daily opinion pieces.

Nearly as much as anything, Harvey’s responsible for my love of country & my Conservative politics.

Paul Harvey, rest in peace, you’ve more than earned it.

I remember listening to him in the early 1960’s on trips to Las Vegas with my family, throughout my life and as recently as 6 months ago. His ‘rest of the story’ biographies never failed to surprise me. Well, maybe I wanted to be surprised, but I always enjoyed them.
His son and others filled in for him, but they will only ever be a pale shadow of this humble, intelligent, sweet, witty, Radio Giant.
    RIP Mr. Harvey.

I listened to him as a kid with my Dad on the way to work/shcool…..and I caught him just the other day, they play him in SD twice a day. Some of his stories would give me the chills after he revealed the persons name. So weird that I was just wondering as I listened last, what it was going to be like when “the rest of the story…” would include his passing. Now I know, and it is indeed, a sad day. Paul Harvey, you, will be missed……you’ve been a huge part of many Americans lives for a very very long time……rest in peace Paul!

I first listened to Paul Harvey in 1963while working a summer job selling door-to-door. My boss (another sales person) would park the car so we could listen to Paul on our lunch break. That was the same summer I learned about conservative politics and worked to campaign for Barry Goldwater.

Paul has provided many memorable broadcasts and I shall miss him greatly. His son has tried to carry on but it is hard to match the legend!

So Paul Harvey … Good Day! RIP

He needs to have a Rest of the Story done about him.
