Tulsa World:

Sales of guns, ammo still high

One shop says the “hoarding” of ammunition since Obama’s election has created a shortage.

By KELLY BOSTIAN

Four months after the election of President Barack Obama, firearms and ammunition sales in Tulsa remain at a fever pitch.

Popular self-protection ammunition is often sold out at local stores, weapons are flying off shelves and the state reports an 87 percent increase in concealed carry permit applications for February 2009 over February 2008.

“People are hoarding. They’re creating a shortage,” Jim Prall at Sports World on 41st Street said of ammunition sales. “We’ve sold more ammunition in the last three months than we sold last year.”

Gun sales spiked in November with the election of Barack Obama and Democrats adding to their majority in Congress. But local gun dealers say the spike is turning into a steady climb with political worries about gun rights as well as worries about the economy and potential for increased crime.

Prall said his store planned ahead for the increase, having seen a similar spike after Bill Clinton was elected, but the previous jump in sales pales in comparison to what’s happening now.

“Most we’re selling now we got back in September, but we bought pallets then where normally we wouldn’t have ordered that much.”

The surprise sales come with .380 caliber semi- automatic pistols. A relatively small self-protection weapon, it’s not one that people typically fire in great quantity at the firing range, Prall said. Yet, the ammunition is now hard to find. “Nobody would have predicted that,” he said.

“What’s happened is everybody is afraid because the Democrats are anti-gun,” said David Stone, president of Dong’s Guns and Ammo on East Admiral Place.

Internet chatter about bills in Congress that would create additional taxes on firearms and ammunition components, require strict licensing and ban more types of so-called “assault weapons” add to the concern, Stone said. “That’s just driving everyone into panic mode,” he said. “We’re selling 10 times the ammo we used to.”

Similar bills have come up in Congress before, but few have advanced.

“We ran completely out here of 9 mm and .380,” said Johny Mathews, product and service manager at the U.S. Shooting Sports Academy on East 66th Street North. “We were begging, borrowing and stealing from wherever.”

Concealed-carry classes at the academy are booked through April. “We used to do 15-person classes, and now we do 24 because of the demand,” he said.

Mathews believes that politics are partly to blame, but the economy also has people worried.

“It’s 50/50, I think” he said. “When people lose jobs and get desperate, good people can sometimes do bad things. People hear more about home invasions, robberies, and they think it will only get worse. Then they’re afraid they might lose their guns or ammo, so they stock up.”

Sales are so intense that Stone has limited sales of .380 ammo to one box per customer at Dong’s. He has .380-caliber handguns for sale, and likes to be able to sell ammunition to whoever buys a gun, he said.

A shipment of 10 Ruger .380 LCP handguns was sold in 24 hours this week — seven the first day, three the next. “Last week I had 28 boxes of .380, rationed to one per person, and it was gone in three days,” Stone said.

Academy Sporting Goods stores also are low on .380 ammo. “The other day we got 16 boxes of .380 and a guy came in first thing and bought all 16,” said Jon Ide, hunting and fishing sales associate at the 41st Street store. “A few people are doing all the buying, and it’s the people who are trying to just get a box or two that can’t find any.”

The increased sales comes with an increase in Oklahomans seeking concealed-carry permits.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation pulled in additional help last month so it could process concealed-carry permit applications within the required 90 days, according to the supervisor of the self-defense licensing unit. Unit workers do not release their names.

The 87.2 percent increase for February 2009 over the same month last year was partially due to renewal applications for permits issued three and five years ago. But new applications have steadily risen in the past three years, and increased markedly since November, she said.

She couldn’t share the monthly breakdown on numbers, but as an indication of the volume said the state issued a total of 18,510 permits in 2008. The bureau’s annual reports show the state issued 16,426 permits in 2007 and 9,529 in 2006. There are 75,525 valid active concealed-carry permits in Oklahoma, she said.

I was at the gun/shop range yesterday and you would have thought it was Christmas. The place was packed with shoppers!

  • medicmike

I just found out that Sportsman’s warehouse is liquidating. Most are shutting down, the rest are being sold to a Canadian company.

  • Right_is_Right

Took the CCW course today – there were approximately 70 people or so in there. My buddy took the same one 3 weeks ago with around 100 people.

    It is busy!

  • WestCoastGirl

Took my CCW last week. Can’t find .380 ammo anywhere. Guy that works at the local gun shop gave me a box of his to use out of his personal stockpile of 20,000 from home.

    • JOE …NH

First off my God Jenny you are a Hott(especially the Twitter Pic) and a gun lover too! Too bad I am married!
Do you have/can you get any .223/5.56 available at good prices for a Dollard Shooting Club member?

    • WestCoastGirl

 Jenny-O Can you ship OOT and how many boxes do you have?

Or maybe 10 million people are all thinking insurrection.

AHH yeah…all in one big area..

    Sooner the better. :gun:

Plenty in Wisconsin, a pro gun democratic state. Go figure. I am thinking black market items for the future, since our money will be no good.

  • Ivan the Kafir

.380? WTF? 9mm I understand but .380 is generally considered the bare minimum for self-defense. I wonder how .45 acp is doing…

  • SgtJenz

Even reloading components are getting scarce, especially primers and powder.
Brass is probably the next item that will be difficult to find.

There are a few online ammo suppliers but their sources are drying up and limited to specific calibers, mostly long rifle.
Of course if you live in the PRK ordering ammo online is not allowed. Kalifornia gun laws suk.
Sorry Jenn-O. Had enough of the Golden State after living here off and on for 25 years…it just ain’t so Golden anymore.

  • Roland

A strong vote of no confidence and at the dear price of scarce recession dollars.

I nearly have had the safe and reloading room stocked as I need, but did get a shock this past week shopping for some ammo in the handgun rounds that have never made sense (in quality or economy) to reload. Prices are horrendous compared to pre-election cycle, and despite the traditional wisdom the common cartridges are the unavailable ones. Granddads .32-20 is no problem to feed, but .45ACP Hydroshocks may as well be Vincent motorcycles given price and availability.

  • TerryTate

My wife thought I was crazy when I started stocking up on ammo and guns before the election.

    Now she thinks I’m brilliant.

    Isn’t time and perspective wonderful.

“I was at the gun/shop range yesterday and you would have thought it was Christmas. The place was packed with shoppers!”

I’m sure the administration will find a way to stop this economic growth.

    • Syndromeofadown (The dirty dirty Kafir)

It’s like that everywhere, especially gun shows.

  • unkaglen

What can you say……..People look at the knuckleheads in D.C. and are truely worried. Wide open borders, drug cartels running rampant, the persecution of “Sherrif Joe”.
    Nero fiddles while Rome burns………
But….,not to worry,I just picked up one of the last known 1000 round boxes of SK ammo.As most,I am cocked and locked, bought and stocked………
We true patriots will survive this and watch as the D.C. Dumbacrats burn in HELL…………..

Joe’s Sports and Outdoors is also shutting down.

  • solomonpal

It gets worse…Obama is making his move.

“Effective immediately DOD Surplus, LLC, will be implementing new requirements for mutilation of fired shell casings. The new DRMS requirement calls for DOD Surplus personnel to witness the mutilation of the property and sign the Certificate of Destruction. Mutilation of the property can be done at the DRMO, if permitted by the Government, or it may be mutilated at a site chosen by the buyer. Mutilation means that the property will be destroyed to the extent prevents its reuse or reconstruction. DOD Surplus personnel will determine when property has been sufficiently mutilated to meet the requirements of the Government. ”

Once-fired brass military casings we have already paid for will be destroyed and not made available for public sale for reloading purposes. Selling these casings for scrap reduces the value by 80% and makes ammunition loading components less available. Prices will increase dramatically for several common calibers of ammunition. Suppliers have already suspended sale of once-fired military brass and ammunition made using once-fired brass.

Now this is the entire ObaMao regime in perfect microcosm in that:

It obliquely infringes on basic American liberty.

It increases government spending and waste.

It creates an additional layer of bureaucracy and expands government’s share in the economy.

      It stifles entrepreneurial activity.

It misuses and misdirects scarce resources.

It advances the cause of the most leftist of causes without having any real public discourse on base principles.

Maoist tyranny, yet with plausible deniability to the witless masses.

    • http://www.dirtydozensbunker.com Sanders

They did the same thing with ammo cans and camo nets.

Whatever ammo cans are at your local surplus dealer are all that they will get.

  • Kirk

You would think politicians would take note of these facts, and realize these people also vote. It doesn’t sound like they are in favor of gun control by these record sales, but gun control advocates ignore the facts, as it’s the only way they can keep their jobs as self-appointed, “experts”, and fool the gullible idiots that support them. Now their big cry is Mexico, and this is the new bandwagon they are all jumping on as the latest excuse to ban guns. I could care less about Mexico’s whining. The border is a TWO-WAY-STREET, and the Mexican Government is free to close THEIR SIDE, any time they want. So, the hell with them, and their whining, about OUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS.

I know for sure Wisconsin has plenty of ammo, primers, powder. If you could some how go there.
Internet? If you cant ship to your home state, UPS has stores with mailboxes, where stuff can be shipped to.
Guns shows around Illinois are pretty uncrowded and have plenty of items. I guess its where you are.

  • Bobachek

JI…Where are you at in Wisconsin? I’m in Stoughton just outside of Madison….

    • JayMS

      Bob…

I was just up in Madison at the new Gander Mountain by the interstate. Check them out. Prices have gone up on 00 buck and doubled on .22, but you can still get a a brick of 9mm for pretty decent. They have some decent prices on Mossberg 500′s and an OK stock. The AR-15′s are a bit of a ripoff tho.

    • http://twitter.com/ArchInfidel ArchInfidel

Jay I was there the other day, 9mm you now pay $16 per 50, thats double from a year ago. I’m up in Oshkosh now, and everyone is sold out of 9mm. all ammo has basically doubled. :gun:

  • David

10,000,000 people thinking about insurrection? I think they will need more than a .380 hangun. Why didn’t the manufacturers think about this before nobama suckered the people? Why didn’t they increase production? I went to a show last summer and saw basic AR-15′s for $700. The same manufacturer was selling them for more than $1,000 in November. The February show had them for $1,100. There seems to be ammo at the shows and many real weapons for the insurrection.

  • dogbert41

The one thing that makes me really mad about this whole situation is the profiteering.

If everyone would just cool their fucking jets and buy what they need, instead swapping out their 401K for ammo and guns they could never shoot up in a lifetime, there’d be enough to go around…

High praise for Magpul They still sell their magazines at the same prices they were before last summer. So when you see Pmags going for 30 or more, it’s a profiteer. Kick em in the balls and then knock out their teeth for it. Shout them out of the gunshows. Make them ashamed for that shit.

Just some advice from an observer….

I would not be quick to say my home on the internet.

I have noticed that there have been a lot of gun thefts talked about on several sites (here, jawa, exurbanleague, and others).

I don’t mean any thing to be extremely critical of JI, but I wouldn’t tell him “online” how to find me in “your home state”, just in case.

I have noticed that here on Pat Dollard a few weeks ago, there was probably at least on KosKid or HuffPo liberal snooping on us…..One of them had very bad grammer and syntax, very “ebonics” in their writing, if you know what I mean.

I had a great razz going back and forth with TedB the other day…don’t know if he is liberal or conservative, but he was a nice guy.

Just saying, we are talking guns and safety, and not giving anybody too much information.

I think they are trying to close gun stores as well.

Jenny, your time has come as the cutest science geek girl in ACCDF. Ammo supplies have become too short. You have to accelerate your work on weaponized raccoons and by-products.
