The Alabama Condom Crisis

McClatchy:

Call it a condom conundrum.

At a time when the federal government is spending billions of stimulus dollars to stem the tide of U.S. layoffs, should that same government put even more Americans out of work by buying cheaper foreign products?

In this case, Chinese condoms.

That’s the dilemma for the folks at the U.S. Agency for International Development, which has distributed an estimated 10 billion U.S.-made AIDS-preventing condoms in poor countries around the world.

But not anymore.

In a move expected to cost 300 American jobs, the government is switching to cheaper off-shore condoms, including some made in China.

The switch comes despite implied assurances over the years that the agency would continue to buy American whenever possible.

“Of course, we considered how many U.S. jobs would be affected by this move,” said a USAID official who spoke on the condition that he would not be named. But he said the reasons for the change included lower prices (2 cents versus more than 5 cents for U.S.-made condoms) and the fact that Congress dropped “buy American language” in a recent appropriations bill.

Besides, he said, the sole U.S. supplier — an Alabama company called Alatech — had previous delivery problems under the program.

It’s clear that Alatech’s problems over the years, which apparently have been resolved, may have driven U.S. officials to seek much less expensive foreign-made condoms in the first place.

But that’s cold comfort to Fannie Thomas, who has been making AIDS-preventing condoms in southeastern Alabama for nearly 40 years in the small town of Eufaula.

“We pay taxes down here, too, and with all this stimulus money going to save jobs, it seems to me like they (the U.S. government) should share this contract so they can save jobs here in America,” Thomas said.

Thomas and others at the Alatech plant said there aren’t many alternatives for them if it closes down, which is a likely result of the contracting switch.

In fact, the government is close to accepting condoms from two offshore companies: Unidus Corp., which makes condoms in South Korea, and Qingdao Double Butterfly Group, which makes them in China.

Did you know that condoms come in two sizes? One size for the Oriental market and one size for the rest of the world?

      TRUE FACT.

oops…i’ll ask again in the right comment this time..
and they’re exporting them to africa?

  • MinneSoCold

This sounds like a move the UN would do so someone could pocket the extra money. Then all the 3rd-world countries will blame the US for all the AIDS babies born due to shitty condoms. CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN.

The Chinese Communist flag is treated with utmost respect by Obama. As for the Confederate battle flag, I doubt that Obama associates it with the military prowess of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson and Southern manhood that has served the American military.

I have family in Southern Florida. They are patriotic Americans. But they also flew the Confederate flag. My uncle Homer had 2 pugs. Their names were Betsy Ross and General Lee. My uncles served their country (WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and their sons in later war) , then came home to the South. I’ve tried explaining to my fiancee that a lot of southerners feel the same way about the Rebel flag as they do the American flag. He doesn’t understand. I always thought it’s a good thing my uncle Homer never lived long enough to see the controversy that swirls around it. He was crazy enough to do physical harm to someone because of it.

People that oppose obama should start flying it again. It’s not about racism, it’s about rebellion.

I’d fly it…right next to a flag of my home state of NH ..live free or die !

There is a reason why you can only fit five stars on the Chinese flag and 13 stars on the “Stars and Bars”. (Rebel yell!)

BTW…Considering there are over a billion Chinese, those condoms don’t seem to be working very well.

Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson could have fought for the union. However, they knew that the yankee states were in the wrong on their politicall ambitions. The civil war only took on the racial matter when the yanks were getting their ass kicked. They made it as if they were more moral than the south.

  • CJW

It has to be Obama administration payback to the citizens of Alabama who intelligently voted this past November and made sure their state’s electoral votes went for someone other than Obama.

    CJW;

But in a “kinder and gentler way” than he dealt with the residents of KY during the ice/snow storms of Jan/Feb. He let them die and where was FEMA?

Then, were has the MSM been on the subject? Up The One’s hind end, and begging for more.
