The Anti-Christianity Of Abraham Lincoln
In 2000 Years of Disbelief by James A. Haught, Lincoln is mentioned on pages 125 through 127. From the material presented it would seem that Lincoln as a young man was an avid anti-christian and most likely an atheist. In his later years, he came to believe in God, but still was anti-religious in the sense that he rejected organized religion. Some selections from Haught: John T. Stuart, Lincoln’s first law partner: “He was an avowed and open infidel, and sometimes bordered on Atheism…He went further against Christian beliefs and doctrines and principles than any man I ever heard.”

As a young man Lincoln apparently wrote a manuscript that he planned to publish, which vehemently argued against the divine origin of the Bible and the Christian scheme of salvation. Samuel Hill, a friend and mentor, convinced him to drop it, considering the disastrous consequences it would have on his political career. William H Herndon, a former law partner, wrote a biography on Lincoln titled: “The true story of a great life”. In it Herndon discusses Lincoln’s religious views extensively. Gordon Leidner has collected some quotations from Lincoln’s later years in which he invokes God, and he makes the argument that Lincoln became a sincere believer. It seems to me he did come to believe in God, but he never accepted organized Christianity.

Lets just shatter all the legends surrounding Lincoln shall we? People say alot of things about other people; I don’t necessarily accept…even from 200 years of historical references.

I am a Southerner, born south of the Mason-Dixon line. And on my living room wall I have a pic of both Lincoln and Robert E Lee. Both of whom would have approved of my seeming contradictatorial display of affection for them.
Although I am a southerner by birth, my ancestors fought on the side of the north in the Civil War, and fought on the side of the rebels in the Revolutionary war.
I make no apology for my admiration for all of our great southern Presidents and warriors…And I still like Lincoln.
I dug deep into Lincoln’s early life as a boy and as a young adult. He overcame much adversity to make it into politics. That stick-to-itive-ness, determination to succeed and drive, despite the piss poor cards he was dealt, is still an inspiration to me.

People who make the argument described in the article are invariably referring to a younger Lincoln. Carrying the responsibilities of the office of the Presidency durng the Civil War, Lincoln developed a deep and profound Christian beief. In 1862, Lincoln scribbled “Meditations on the Divine Will” in an effort to understand why the United States was going through the awfulness of the Civil War and at a time that Lincoln was moving toward issuing what we know as the Emancipation Proclamation. The Second Inaugural delivered on March 4, 1865 is as much a religious sermon on God’s will as it is a state paper.
I’m going to start observing Obama in this light.

As I posted elsewhere, I’m currently reading a book on “Lincoln and his letters” and it’s filled with his references to God……filled.
When he won the Presidency he writes how he has a task more difficult than even Washington, and (from memory): “without God there’s no chance we can succeed; but with God there’s no chance we can fail” (again, paraphrasing).
To say he was “anti-Christianity” is nutzo, but there you have the leftists with their commie, secular agenda.
There are people out there that claim that Lincoln was gay and part black. All of this could be of use in formulating this theory.

Like George Washington, Abe Lincoln has only lost his Christianity since these “seperation of church and state” atheists have been trying to rewrite history.
You can read original Lincoln speeches and manuscripts on the subject, Abe tended to quote the bible very frequently during his private and public life.
Could this be because he was raised in a devout, old school Baptist household, learned to read and seek wisdom from the bible, volunteered at the church, married in the Presbyterian church, a member in the Methodist church in Springfield IL. Traveling a lot as a lawyer riding the circuit and in politics, most church services he attended was as a guest, hardly detracts from his christian beliefs.
Lincoln’s last official act as President was to issue an edict to inscribe “IN GOD WE TRUST” on all US coinage, hardly the work of an atheist or agnostic.
