MARQUETTE — Parents Shane and Sarah Reinfelder get to hold their newborn twins for the first time on Friday. A special moment because it’s a miracle little Valerie Marie and Kaylin Joy are even here.
“Most women are born with one uterus,” explained OBGYN Dr. Connie Hedmark. “Sarah was born with 2 and that’s a very unusual situation in the first place. So the chances of getting pregnant and then having a pregnancy in each uterus becomes exceedingly rare.”
So rare that there’s been only 3 other reported cases in the world. Sarah found out about the extra uterus after having a miscarriage a couple years ago.
The Reinfelder’s also have a 10 month old son named William. Sarah says her condition made that pregnancy hard. But a few months after William’s birth, she was in for the shock of a lifetime.
“They told me your birth control isn’t working, guess what, you’re pregnant!” Sarah said. “I was like okay. And then they did the ultrasound and said guess what you’re pregnant twice! And that’s when I almost wet my pants.”

After they were delivered by caesarian section Thursday afternoon, the babies were brought to the NICU. Since they were born 7 weeks early, Valerie and Kaylin have premature lungs. Doctors say it’s common for premature babies to be underdeveloped, and they’re confident Valerie and Kaylin, both around 4 pounds, will be just fine.
“At 33 weeks those babies will do really well,” said OBGYN Dr. Breanna Pond. “They did receive steroids which helps lung development and they’ll receive everything in the NICU as well to help get them to develop along like they had been in utero.”
As for Shane and Sarah, the reality of their medical miracle is starting to set in.
“I’m so excited,” Sarah said. “I couldn’t sleep at all last night. I was just thinking about the girls and how I was so happy they were healthy because nobody really knew what to expect.”
“It’s still setting in here,” Shane said. “It’s like okay, they’re here. Now what?”
The babies will spend the next 3 weeks in the NICU. After that, the Reinfelder’s say it’s back home to Sault St. Marie, where the adventure of raising 3 small children can begin.

If you go with Darwin you would be led to believe that evolution as allowing for greater child support. How much you wanny bet the first words those kids say is “power of attorney”.
