GM To Cease Production For At Least Three Months -With Video

DETROIT — Two people briefed on the plan say General Motors Corp. will close most of its U.S. factories for up to nine weeks this summer because of slumping sales and growing inventories of unsold vehicles.

The people did not know exactly when the shutdowns would occur, but both say they will include the normal two-week closure in July to change from one model year to the next. Neither person wanted to be identified because workers have not been told of the shutdowns.

GM spokesman Chris Lee would not comment other than to say the company notifies employees before making any production cuts public.

GM is living on $13.4 billion in government loans and faces a June 1 deadline to restructure or seek bankruptcy protection.

    if the GM doofs would have a fire sale, 40% off,
    just to get cash flow they would be back to work
    by july 4th.

    Yep, read the article. Under the union contracts, the factory workers will still be paid in addition to unemployment an amount which will almost completely replace the wages. So these guys will still get 20-25 an hour to NOT build cars most people don’t want anymore. This albatross will be around our necks for a long time.

    What I want to know, Dear GM, is where the hell is my free GMC Sierra? My kids and I are going to pay enough in future taxes plus interest and inflation to cover it. Where is it? I want one. You owe it to me and all the tax payers. One free GM vehicle.

    You wouldn’t believe what I just went through trying to get a replacement window for the Saab…long story but the car is a year old and they told me it was no longer available due to the situation with GM.. :shock: !!! So I said well I guess the car is totaled :mad: . Then he did the classic ..well I’ll go and talk to the manager routine and a day later a window was available. :evil:
