Obama Gives Queen A Second iPod

Barack Obama met the Queen at Buckingham Palace today and gave her a gift of an iPod loaded with video footage and photographs of her 2007 United States visit to the Richmond, Jamestown and Williamsburg in Virginia. In return, the Queen gave the President a silver framed signed photograph of herself and the Duke of Edinburgh – apparently a standard present for visiting dignitaries.

The Queen already has an iPod, a 6GB silver Mini version she bought in 2005 at the suggestion of Prince Andrew.

Earlier, Mr Obama had spoken of his admiration for Her Majesty but indicated that his wife was handling the details of their royal meeting. “There’s one last thing that I should mention that I love about Great Britain, and that is the Queen,” he said at the end of his joint press conference with Gordon Brown.

“And so I’m very much looking forward to meeting her for the first time later this evening. And as you might imagine, Michelle has been really thinking that through — because I think in the imagination of people throughout America, I think what the Queen stands for and her decency and her civility, what she represents, that’s very important.”

Mr Brown added: “Well, I know the Queen is looking forward to welcoming you and she’s very much looking forward to her discussion with you.”

There was widespread criticism in Britain and from Anglophiles in the US of Mr Obama’s recent present to Mr Brown of a box set of classic American movies on DVDs that were not compatible with British DVD players.

      Yeah, international standing of the USA is really going to see a lot of improvements with ol’ barry in charge. Michelle picking out the gifts shows she is as out of touch as any liberal.

      Just goes hand in hand with everything else the O’s have been doing or have planned.

      Just like that $600 tax rebate sent out by Bush last year, the $13 a week credit we will see, like that will have mroe affect than a single check> what was that the esteemed fahion queen Michelle Obama said about Bush’s rebate???

    WTF is wrong with these people? With all the gazillion interns, aides, etc running around the whitehouse and gobs of money they are spending they are completely incapable of sending someone to Saks or Macy’s?

    I realize this is a small issue in the grand scheme but to me it is indicative of a greater problem and mindset of this administration.

      Even Saks and Macy’s is rather low class when you’re talking about someone like Her Most Britannic Majesty. You don’t get her something that was made in some third world sweatshop.

      If you really care and have any tact, and if you care at all to demonstrate what a powerful country you are, you COMMISSION a gift for her. Of this gift, there would be but one. Its construction would be unique and highly skilled. Its materials would be at least semi-precious.

      If I were a Russian diplomat, for example, the gift of a Faberge egg would be a perfect example.

      My guess is the Queen’s portrait is worth quite due to rarity, plus I bet the silver frame isn’t something they pick-up at Target or Walmart. The portrait in itself is a customary gift by the Royal Family, whereas PM Brown presented a much more personal gift on behalf of the UK. Giving an iPod to the Queen is like you giving your mom a can of motor oil for Mother’s Day. Both are insultingly thoughtless and if someone else in the house might be able to use it, that doesn’t make it right.

    The White House peasants obviously have no idea who they’re talking to. They needed to be reminded that Britain was the most powerful nation on earth – second to none (until after WWI). Germany, Russia, and America all trod delicately where British rights and privileges were concerned. British sea power was equal to that of the next two largest nations combined. Even now in its currently diminished state, the United Kingdom is still a force to be reckoned with.

    From another perspective, the royal House of Windsor is the last major remaining royal house left in Europe. The Bourbons are gone. So too the Romanovs and the Hohenzollerns. So too the Emmanuels. Although I’m not certain of the veracity of it, I believe the royal houses of Denmark, Monaco, Greece, and Belgium are still intact.

    Further still, Her Most Britannic Majesty is the daughter of King George VI (king during WWII) and is one of the longest-reigning monarchs in British history. He should have shown SOME deference to her title, person, age, and lineage. He is a head of state and as such, the gravity of his actions is very weighty indeed.
