After maor disasters there is usually some sort of humorous joke or event. Humor, I think, is an evolutionary adaptation to our ability to predict the future. Knowing you are going to die (sometime in the future, maybe this moment) could be highly depressive so humor evolved to deal with the stress.
You will note there was Challenger humor, Katrina humor and even humor in Iraq.
There is, to my knowledge, no 9-11 humor.
Keep laughing people. Laughter is the best medicine.

For the same reason today’s Sunday NYT had a front page story on how many artists are painting or drawing (etc) Obama pictures and how the art world is gaga over Obama.
