CBS News Chief Legal Analyst: “Cheney Is Just A Dick”

May 23, 2009 45 Comments ›› Pat Dollard

Cheney

News Busters:

It appears CBS News’s Chief Legal Analyst doesn’t agree with his colleague Bob Schieffer that former Vice President Dick Cheney is winning the national security debate with Barack Obama.

Quite the contrary, Andrew Cohen thinks Cheney is still living in “the world of September 11, 2001, a world where hijacked planes are screaming toward their targets, chaos reigns, and anything goes.”

As a result, Cohen wondered in a Friday posting at his CBSNews.com blog “Court Watch” if Cheney is, “as many people say, just a d**k”:

People far smarter than me have tried to psychoanalyze Dick Cheney to understand his motivations, both recent and past. Books have been written on the topic; talking head politicos have strained neck muscles arguing the matter before television cameras. But after watching Cheney’s terror-law speech on Thursday, and after reading his prepared remarks, let me humbly offer a theory that may explain both why he seems so creepy to so many and so right to some. [...]

How do we account for Cheney’s failure or refusal to acknowledge all that we have learned about the world since 2002? How do we explain the worldview he continues to share with his camp followers both in and out of power? Do we chalk it up to him being a stubborn, venal, self-righteous man incapable of admitting his own mistakes? Is he truly what Andrew Sullivan calls a “dead-ender?” Do we hang it on his ideology? On his Western individualism that eschews the need for consensus and compromise? Or is he, as many people say, just a d**k. [sic]

  • Mrs. Scoot

Ok, I am not going to be popular by saying this, but I don’t care.

Dick needs to go away. Far, Far away, as in Star Wars far away. He is just as much a criminal as the rest of them, and he is ruining the republican party even more by opening his trap. He is NOT President or Vice President, depending on how you look at it, anymore. If there is to be change, he needs to shut the fuck up.

    • John454

Take the “criminal” bullshit elsewhere. We are all sick of hearing it. They all kept people alive by gaining info, where I come from they are called heroes.

It’s about fucking time someone in this party stands up to the lies.

    • Jerb

Please, if you will Mrs. Scoot, refute any of the points or assertion that Mr. Cheney has been making in the last couple of weeks. Then please tell us what should be done in it’s place.

Criminal, eh? What about Obama? He’s keeping most of what Bush and Cheney did anyway. Doesn’t that mean he is aiding and abetting?

      I smell a lib troll!

    • JohnRussel

You realize, of course, that you are only privileged to say that because the Dick Cheney’s of America and my BUDS have kept you safe. Imagine opening your rattrap like you did if the 911 terrorist’s had truly succeeded (or if they still succeed…). Just because Cheney and Bush and my Brother’s in Arms have kept the likes of your sorry ass safe so far doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods. It ain’t over yet, Sweetcakes. So please STFU and thank a Soldier that America the Beautiful is still FREE.

Memorial Day. Thanks Bro’s. Great job, True Americans.

    • SgtJenz

Criminal? You’ll need to be more specific with all due respect.

The Republican party was ruined by assholes like McLame and the rest of the RINO’s. They abandoned conservative values in favor of more liberal ones and for what? Votes?
      Screw the GOP.

    • mshatto

Mrs. Scoot – Please give me facts not feelings.

      1) Please be specific, what crime did VP Cheney break?

      2) What did he do to ruin the republican(sic)party?

3)What change would you like to see?

      cricket, cricket, cricket……………

    • Scoot

So, I guess with Obama using The Patriot Act against us now is okay?

Who was responsible for this legislative act?

cheney is asked to speak at these functions.. this talk was scheduled months ago and before odumba was to give his soros/speech… historically we must not curtail or censor the makers of history right or wrong…. the odumba/soros camp has attacked the bush/cheney camp for yrs and continue today..just listen to any of odumba/soros prepared speeches…on his own odumba can’t put together 2 coherent sentences…

    • Hardball1911

Sorry Scoot, that dog don’t hunt.

Bush and Cheney didn’t write the legislation, Congress did. They pass the legislation, the President simply signs it into law. What kind of political mess do you think would have happened if the President vetoed an act that would secure the country.

Here’s the problem. No matter the intent of an act of legislation, it will always be distorted by the corrupt to benefit their own agenda. This includes the liberal pieces of shit like O’fuck. It is their game. They intentionally distort and lie, that is their mode of operation.

Scoot, and Mrs. Scoot, I challenge you both to recite the clauses of the Patriot act that are, in intent, illegal, and counter American. I have read the entire act, and the intent, and while I can say that I don’t necessarily agree with the entirety of the act, I can say this: It was outside of the law for the intelligence agencies to collect the information that was necessary to collect in order to prevent a direct attack on our own soils once again. It worked, when used properly, but the lack of foresight is where you should be applying the angst. Now that we have usurpers in positions to utilize the legislation illegally, they assist you both in directing your anger where it should not be, at someone other than the wrong doers. And you allow them to defeat you almost willingly and without a fight.

Dick Cheney, as unpopular as this might sound, is exactly what the country needs at the moment. He is the voice of reason and warning. He at the very least, has more guts than most in using his position to advertise a very common truth as vocally as possible. O’fuck is going to get us all fucking killed, and the “average citizen” is too stupid to recognize that fact, and has bought every lie that O’fuck has told. Now, I will ask you, who is the real criminal? Is it the douche that simply does what he does by lying, cheating and stealing, or is it the enabling public? It isn’t the former administration, I can tell you that. While I don’t agree 100% with everything that the former administration did, I can tell you that their main focus was keeping every citizen safe, as individuals. The current administration sees the individual as an obstacle that must be overcome. “To each according to their need, from each according to their ability.” It’s being put into practice as we speak.

Please re-evaluate your priorities in the anger department.

    • aboutTObegin

Hardball, your perspective is always refreshing! I never have to actively add after your posts!!! Well said. JohnRussel, well said as well….to bad people do not REALIZE that it is not the President who makes the laws…it is Congress….and at that time we had a Congress of both Republicans and Demorats…to include Pelosi(even though she still denies knowing anything went on…). and you do have to admit, we were NEVER attacked again after 9/11…unlike when the idiot clinton was in office….it occurred almost nightly…. and now we have a usurper in office that is bringing down all of the safeguards emplaced by the previous aministration that prevented any further attack because they are ‘criminal’ in nature…I say bull$hit! Compare kaleid sheik mohammed that we waterboarded 3 times to him sawing off Daniel Pearls head off….which is criminal? wake the fuck up. I am tired of idiots buying into the libertarded propaganda…when there are many of us fighting the fight in order the civilians to live free!

I would put Cheney on a pedestal and hope any true Republican would listen to him. Anyone who disagrees with him is a RINO only.

  • http://www.thebandofmothers.com Beverly

    Mrs. Scoot:

You need to wake up, come out of your fog and take notice that you have been ever so safe for the last 7 years because of men like Dick Cheney. You see, brave men like Cheney have stood up to the plate and taken action to protect Americans. Cheney needs to speak up before this imbecile in the white house gets us all killed! Cheney knows the enemy and God Bless him for reminding Americans how evil the terrorists are!

There is no way to dispute the FACT: We have been safe on this soil under the watchful eye of Bush and Cheney. That is a fact and speaks volumes for what they must have done right.

The little boy in the White House needs to go back to school or take some lessons from the adults who have kept us safe for the last 7 yeras!

    Beverly Perlson
    The Band of Mothers

  • JohnRussel

And one more thing: No torture? OK. Hypothetical. Say they’ve got your kid…you have a choice between mollycoddling the mf’s and protecting their “rights”, or tweaking their nuts a little to find out where your kid is. Whatta ya do?

    Well, “Kinder Gentler”, WHATCHA DO?

    • Tim Roesch

The problem is, like in many places, words have been leeched of their meaning.

What, exactly, is torture? Without a definitive definition, ‘torture’ can be anything from not letting a child have the toy he wants to attaching electrodes to testicles for fun and entertainment.

Like when Clinton undid the definition of sex by suggesting a blowjob wasn’t sex (and you haven’t had the honor of having your jaw drop until you’ve sat in a classroom and listened to seventeen year olds discuss how they agree with Clinton: that oral sex isn’t really sex).

More than Obama must be ‘changed’.
The system is rotten and subverted and needs a thorough changing or Obama will be replaced with something worse.

Instead of defending Cheney, think about what has been done to your language, to discourse, to thought.

  • vincenzo4

I keep asking all these pompous, patronizing assholes where was there intellectual concern during the 1990s when American blood was shed regularly and not god damn thing was done, proof being it escalated to 9/11.

Not one of these intellectual leftist assholes was the slightest concerned. I have absolutely no respect for cowards, or ideologically compromised elites whose first love is not country, it is self and selfish.

I have no use for any of them or their money.

  • vincenzo4

Mrs. Scoot: What the hell are you talking about? You know nothing, and have no conception of the circumstances, and obviously no recollection of how we wound up on 9/11.

Your boy Obama committed egregious espionage, fulfilling enemy objectives when he presided over the release of highly classified waterboarding and other interrogation techniques. This caused exceptionally grabe damage to national security. None of what he has done was necessary or crucial to anything else. he committed a huge felony. Period. He never should have been cleared for any access at all, and what’s the first thing he does, compromuises national security and proves himself the high risk and saboteur that intelligence and security professionals predicted he would indeed be.

Then we have the other smart ass complicit leftist who very deliberately released more classified family jewels causing exceptionally grave damage to national security by clarifying and ommenting on the bunker.

These are just two examples of Democrat complicity over the last several decades.

And you have the absolute gaul to even say word one about Dick Cheney?

  • vincenzo4

Scoot: Maybe our values will halt this shit: http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20090425/twl-children-killed-by-football-bomb-41f21e0.html

I suppose you wouldn’t waterboard these assholes and let scores of kids die.

Ever heard of soccer fields in Iraq that blew up as kids played soccer.

    Of course not.

Fucking arrogant sheep, betray the sheepdogs and elected a fucking wolf.

  • Scoot

Okay, I’m here standing up for my wife and myself.

We didn’t say he was criminal for doing the waterboarding, or going to war, as some here have accused. We are saying that all the politicians we have had in office after Reagan are criminals, they have not looked out for our best interests for a long, long time. They have always put their special interests in front of what is good for the people. Obama is just like the rest, but he is like every other President we’ve had, but he’s doing things like he’s on steroids.

All this shit with Cheney and Obama having their pissing contests are just a diversion, and they are more than likely having things done to our country that will affect us, because all of us are focused on this waterboarding shit.

Sorry we don’t put Cheney up on a pedestal, but I thought this was the USA, where we won’t be persecuted for our beliefs, and having the balls to say this, especially on this site. I thought this is what we are all fighting for…to keep our freedoms, no matter who we like or don’t like.

With the way this country is being torn up, we can only hope we will be able to argue about our politics in the near future without fear.

  • Mark Gibbons

scoot the fuck out of America and take your wife, Please.

    • Tim Roesch

Mark, do not become the monster you are fighting. Scoot’s comments, though inflammatory and possibly misinformed are not worthy of exile or threats.

If we are, indeed, the one third then it is part of our job to educate the one third who are ignorant of what is going on.

That is how one third becomes two thirds and kicks the ass of the one third who will try to kill the sheepdog and elect the wolf.

Do not fight left wing lunatics by becoming a right wing lunatic.

  • Scoot

What I’m seeing, after Mark’s comment, is that you all will follow Cheney, no matter what he does or what he thinks, and you’ll fall in line with all his policies, without questioning anything.

Sound familiar to what’s going on today?

We have been on this site for quite a while, and have contributed greatly to this cause. If you all can’t accept what we have to say, then you all can go to hell. Just because we don’t have the same 100% view that you all do, does not make us the enemy. I thought this is what this fight is about, to get ALL the clans together…or is that just a catch phrase to everyone here?

    • Lone Wolf

Hey, just back it up with logic and evidence and you can say whatever you want. Having an emotional outburst, though, won’t convince anybody. No one is capable of knowing all of the truth about any subject, and we will all be wrong about some things some times just because we have incomplete knowledge. We’re all here to learn and exchange information and viewpoints.

Personally, I have some heartburn with the Patriot Act too – I think it was another case of Congress being in a hurry to pass a bill without reading it. One of the prices of freedom is having to take care of ourselves and not have government poking into our personal lives. Several people would have had concealed weapons with them on those planes if our nanny state didn’t interfere with our right to self defense. I’m sure that would have changed the hijackers calculus – and they would have done something different.

    • SgtJenz

      Scoot,

None of us are blind to political expediency. But a generalized statement condemning Cheney is exactly what left wingers throw out. It’s called character assassination without substance.
Back it up with facts and we can all learn something.

While Bush and Cheney may have had a hand in the downfall of the Republican party the fact is the majority of the elitist GOP abandoned conservative values for political expediency. They are more concerned about getting reelected than about doing what is right. Republicans abandoned us not the other way around.

I understand your anger but give us something to work with here besides vitriol. Most of us will listen.

Personally I didn’t like the Patriot Act. The idea behind it had value but I am also a realist. Men…politicians can and will corrupt it. My primary concern was being exactly where we are now politically. That is with a Democrat dominated Congress. They have a history of using everything for their own ends. It’s all about power and they don’t care how they get it.

 scoot i for one belive Cheny did the best he could, and i for one belive in torture, if torture is water boarding. Lets see tie some dick to a board and throw a bucket of water on his stinky ass, hummmmmmmm works for me.

  • http://reagancafe.blogspot.com Mike from L.A.

    Mr. and Mrs. Scoot,

I have heard conservatives like yourselves before.

I get this gut feeling your all Ron Paul backers AKA Paulians. Are you? Please answer my question with integrity.

All: If you see the link(below) of Ron Paul presenting his case, I can see that that your views(Scoot) are aligned with his.

It is good to show Reagan conservatives how Paulians think when it comes to national security.

  • johneb

    Scoot,
Why don’t you give some specifics on why you think Cheney is a criminal. What policies of the Bush administration are you talking about? There are a few I disagree with like medicaire drugs, immigration and earmarks. I can’t think of anything I consider criminal.

  • tlk

Re: Cheney. As far as I can tell he is the only grown up around. He made the man child come off as very nervous and acting like a defensive fool. This alone puts Cheney in the hero’s seat. I’m glad to have Cheney on our side…personally, I wouldn’t want him as my enemy.

  • http://www.thebandofmothers.com Beverly

    Scoot,

Irregardless of whether you like Cheney or not, the fact remains we have been safe under the watchful eye of Bush and Cheney for 7 years! There is no disputing that, it is fact.

I value my childrens lives and my fellow Americans too. I never ever want to see my fellow Americans jumping out of buildings to keep from being burned alive ever again! Terrorists are psychotic fanatics who want to cut our heads off and thank God for brave men like DIck Cheney whose loyalties lie with Americans, not the terrorist thugs!

I am thankful that Cheney spoke up, somebody better! I hope he doesn’t let up, he knows what the intelligence is and he is trying to keep America safe.

  • Bryan J

I love these people that call themselve conservatives, but fall into every liberal trap. All the dems are doing is driving a wedge in our party, and there is aways a group of Republicans that pile on everytime.

The Dems don’t argue issues they Character assassinate the opposition. Paul Bagala recently admitted just that. He said in the first term Bush’s favorabilty rating was so high they were afraid of a backlash if they attacked him. The chose to attack Cheney instead. They made him a straw man for the administation. They started rumors that Cheney was secretly in command. He had senister motives bent on taking away civil rights at home & trying to become a world dictator. Their goal was for people to distrust him & dislike him.

How much power does any Vice President actually have? He has no Constitutial authority to order any policy be carried out.

Too many good republicans have been sacraficed because of baseless rumors have repeated so many time people want to believe them. That is all takes to lynch a republican. If you don’t believe me ask Ted Stevens or Mark Foley.

  • mshatto

    Scoot,
I’m still waiting for an answer from you and the misses. Your responses to others have been ignorant at best. Casting aspersions on all who commented is weak. If you and yours can’t answer with facts then admit you & the wife made a stupid comment and move on. The two of you are no different than whiny, juvenile liberals in moveon.org or the foolish whenches in Code Pink. No facts, just feelings, a really juvenile way to think and live. For the sake of helping you out though let’s try this again:

Please give me facts not feelings.

    1) Please be specific, what crime did VP Cheney break?

    2) What did he do to ruin the republican(sic)party?

3)What change would you like to see?

  • mshatto

Scoot – The Patriot Act was passed by congress on the following vote

Passed the House on October 24, 2001 with 357 yeas and 66 nays.
Passed the Senate on October 25, 2001 98-10.

It was reauthorized with the following totals:
House of Reps – 280 yeas to 138 no and the Senate voting 89-10 to affirm the measure. The vote again was largely on party lines.

Was the Patriot Act still the work of VP Cheney or were many others involved? Are you mad at him for something he personally did to you or are you just feeling angry at him because it makes you feel better? It sucks that the facts don’t support your feelings but ain’t life a bitch.

  • Mark Gibbons

I will fight for a Cheney-Cheney ticket. No more rhinos.

  • Scoot

I guess we weren’t part of the Remnant after all.

How quickly people turn their backs on people over one man.

    So long patriots.

    • mshatto

Really? Man up. Some people said mean things to you, other people attempted to engage you in honest, intellectual debate and you respond this way?

If you can’t handle a little heat for a comment you or yours made then how would you react in a truly difficult situation.

Egads boy, grow a pair and defend yourself with some intelligence and maturity instead of running awa.

  • Mark Gibbons

I personally would never turn my back on a patriot like Dick Cheney.

  • Dark Night’s daughter

Looks like the second American Civil War is starting right here.
People PLEASE this issue is not worth it!

  • Poe

The patriot act was bullshit, taking the scum out of there country of origin and sticking them in Gitmo was bullshit, disbanding the Iraqi military was bullshit, but its all hindsight bullshit…

What they did worked, could it have been done better? In retrospect, probably, but busting there balls when they did not fail is just parroting some other fucks propaganada. Hell, if Obama doesnt fuck up I will back up those that speak out agains him, and I got no love for any politician regardless of the masacot.

Cheney is a Dick, and I think we were lucky to have him where he was when we did.

    • Hardball1911

      Poe,

Probably one of the first times I’ve said this to you, as we mostly are adversarial here, but I agree with you on this one.

He may be a dick, but it sometimes takes a dick to get things done properly. Well said.

  • Minuteman1

Ok, so say Cheney shuts up and goes away. Then what? Who’s standing up?

All this shit by all these people belittling Cheney was the same shit and people belittling sarah Palin. The kind of Republicans they like are people like Arlen Spectre, Olympia Snow, Colin Powell, you get my drift? The Rinos have fucked our party, and they in turn have enabled a dictator who may one day end up just as fucking evil as Hitler and Stalin.

So why should Cheney shut the fuck up? Go away? He is just as viable as a Republican leader as Mitt Romney… Mitt Romney. What the fuck is his position? At least Dick Cheney was the Vice President for 8 fuckin years during a time of war… Oh, but Hillary or anyone in this administration won’t even talk to him about shit. Talk about retarded arrogant mother fuckers. :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun:

  • Tim Roesch

    Okay, people, breathe…

The problem here is there is so much misinformation, so much inuendo (sp), so much anger and lust for vengeance we are in danger of missing the big picture.

I, personally, do not think that Obama is the issue here.
The main stream media with their constant harping on issues DESPITE facts is. Read some Goebbels on propaganda.

Our first enemy is the mainstream media and it is there that I think true Americans should strike. We need to break the hold on information the MSM has. We need to break our kids free from schools that teach our children to obey their lusts and are then lead by them.

Obama is merely one of the heads of the Hydra. We need to attack its heart and soul or we will be lured into useless arguments such as this one. While we shout back and forth (Cheney-Dick-Cheney-Dick) the enemy snickers and destroys us.

The fact that the MSM has such a free hand in distorting facts is the real enemy here.

  • http://www.myspace.com/idcchief MarineDoc

Cheney is going to stand up because he is a patriot and he gives a damn about this country. He has the freedom of speech and should be allowed to exercise it. Bush-Cheney were doing what they believed was best for this country at the time and like always the self intrest goals of the politicians in Congress have preverted to excess. Do not be to offended Mr an Mrs Scoot. As you know from your time here that we are all passionate. I think most are excited (as I am as well) that some one with a non-apologetic, nononsense approach has finally stood up and said enough is enough. I personally have lost interest with the Republican party due to the constant RINO rollover dance we see time and time again (few exceptions). I am probably more of a libetarian at this point. My long winded point is that we need people like Cheney to stand up and push back, whether you like him or not. The alternative is not acceptable.
I do like Cheney though and if he can make a product like his daughter….well, need I say more!

  • Mich

Scoot- Unlike you WE LOVE DICK. You should try it sometime

  • Blade Runner

Obana fana is basing his entire “campaign” on blaming Bush for the mess we are in. He has filled his court with Clinton has-beens. Good to see some of Bush’s buddies step up to the plate, not to defend, but to attack. Let’s add Liz Cheney to the mix. Every time the media meatheads try to pull some shit with her, she hammers them.

Sickem! Dick and Liz, it’s about time some conservatives grew a pair.
