Gallup: Only 42% Of Americans Consider Themselves Pro-Choice

Washington Times:

More Americans now say they are “pro-life” than “pro-choice,” according to a Gallup poll released Friday.

A majority of respondents 51 percent are against the practice of abortion, while 42 percent classified themselves as being pro-choice.

“This is the first time a majority of U.S. adults have identified themselves as pro-life since Gallup began asking this question in 1995,” said Gallup analyst Lydia Saad.

The findings represent “a significant shift from a year ago,” when 50 percent of the respondents were pro-choice and 44 percent pro-life. The numbers of Republicans, Protestants, Catholics, conservatives, men and women who identify themselves as pro-life are all rising.

It seems a change in the White House has prompted the change of heart.

“With the first pro-choice president in eight years already making changes to the nation’s policies on funding abortion overseas, expressing his support for the Freedom of Choice Act, and moving toward rescinding federal job protections for medical workers who refuse to participate in abortion procedures, Americans and, in particular, Republicans seem to be taking a step back from the pro-choice position,” Ms.] Saad said.

Among Republicans, 70 percent are pro-life, up from 60 percent last year. The number who are pro-choice has fallen from 36 percent to 26 percent in the same time period. Sentiments among Democrats have remained steady for almost a decade: 61 percent of Democrats say they are pro-choice and 33 percent are pro-life, with insignificant variances over the years.

“It is possible that, through his abortion policies, President Obama has pushed the public’s understanding of what it means to be ‘pro-choice’ slightly to the left, politically,” Ms. Saad said. “While Democrats may support that, as they generally support everything Obama is doing as president, it may be driving others in the opposite direction.”

Pro-choice groups, however, say the survey is far from the the final word on abortion rights.

“The findings in this Gallup poll do not square with the voting patterns in the last two elections cycles,” said Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “It would be a mistake for anti-choice groups to interpret this one poll as a signal that Americans want even more interference from politicians in their personal, private decisions, including a woman’s right to choose safe, legal abortion.”

Gallup’s findings come at a potentially volatile time for Mr. Obama, who is scheduled to address the graduating class of Notre Dame on Sunday. He will also receive an honorary law degree from the Catholic university.

Already, more than a dozen pro-life demonstrators led by past presidential hopeful Alan Keyes were arrested Friday after protesting Mr. Obama’s appearance. Pro-life Notre Dame students plan to boycott the commencement and attend a prayer vigil instead.

Liberal Catholics, meanwhile, launched their own volley with a full page ad in the South Bend Tribune announcing their support of Mr. Obama and a “civil dialogue.”

The situation has presented an opportunity for some.

“I think that to the degree that Notre Dame still thinks of itself as a Catholic institution, it raises real questions. One, it invites somebody who, as a state senator, voted to protect the right of abortionists to kill babies,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told Fox News this week. “And I think the president’s position has been the most radical pro-abortion of any American president.”

Friday’s Gallup poll shows that 71 percent of conservatives are pro-life, up five percentage points from last year. 59 percent of Protestants or “other Christians” are pro-life compared with 51 percent a year ago. Among Roman Catholics, the numbers rose from 45 percent to 52 percent.

Feelings are shifting among the sexes as well.

“Now, because of heightened pro-life sentiment among both groups, women as well as men are more likely to be pro-life,” the poll stated.

In 2008, half of women were pro-choice; now the number stands at 44 percent. Another 43 percent said they were pro-life a year ago. That number is now 49 percent.

Among men, the findings are more pronounced: 49 percent identified themselves as pro-choice a year ago; the number fell to 39 percent this year. A clear majority of men 54 percent are now pro-life, compared with 46 percent a year ago.

The poll of 1,015 adults was conducted May 7-9 and has a margin of error of three percentage points.

“Americans are now seeing through the PR-generated label, ‘pro-choice.’ Sonograms and real-life experience have deemed this label hollow,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List.

“President Obama and the pro-abortion majority in Congress are in a collision course with public opinion on abortion policy. What we’re debating right now taxpayer funding for abortion dramatically outstrips public opinion,” she said.

The numbers could present an opportunity for the Republican Party.

“If Republicans want to improve their electoral performance, standing on the side of life is one of the best decisions they can make,” said Ms. Dannenfelser.

The Pew Research Center also has found support for abortions slipping among Americans. In a survey of 1,521 adults conducted March 31 to April 21, the group found that 46 percent approve of legalized abortion down from 54 percent a year earlier.

Americans appear to have redirected their attention on abortion after Mr. Obama’s presidential victory last November, when the nation was more preoccupied during the 2008 presidential campaign with the economy rather than social issues.

About 18,000 voter exit polls taken in key battleground states found that 80 percent to 90 percent of voters cited the influence of economic issues on their decision.

“The coming four years will see a widening gap between the people and their president on this fundamental issue,” the Rev. Frank Pavone, director of Priests for Life, said at the time.

hmmmm…after a little bit of NopeChange people might be coming around to the value of a human life.

Hispanic immigrants have long been thought a huge asset for the Democrat Party except they are also devote Catholics and very conservative on issues like Abortion and Gay Marriage and highly distinguished ij the military. That boomarang will smack the Dems really good in the years to come. Hispanics are the blessing in disguise for conservative America. We need to remember that and forge ties with this part of the population that is growing our numbers while the rest of the world population decreases (except for the Islamic population).

The statistics show that 52% of Catholics are pro-life. That number is lower than it should be. I went to Catholic schools for 12 years and know of a few Nuns that would be saddened by that percentage. That is one of the cornerstones of the Catholic faith. How sad.

Wouldn’t it be funny if the illegals got legalized by the one, and they turned around and boomarang his ass?

I’m the perfect example of the truth you are speaking.
My dad came hear illegally and put his head down, kept his noes clean, and worked his ass off. Married my mom, who’s father was Schoitish Irish mix and fought three tours in the south pacific, during WW II and brought home an Australian bride my Grandmum, who was first generation from Norway. So in the end I’m just a mut, an American threw and threw. The conservatives Catholic redneck cowboy from Mexico could be freedoms last hope in this sea of liberals American haters. Conservatism is on the rise. One way or a another.

well said Armando….and Rob, you are correct with your assesment in regards to Hispanics….but let me clarify, it is not about race, its about values, and beliefs! That is what defines a true American! I took the oath to protect the Constitution, as did many others here, and by God as my witness, I will defend it.

This is how you defeat abortion. Not by changing laws but by slowly changing attitudes in the culture.

  • amy

Abortion isn’t going anywhere because: 1. It is a huge money maker ($200-$500 an operation x 6-10 a day, on a procedure that takes 15 minutes) 2. As long as feminism is still alive they will NEVER allow it to be banned. They need something to be put out over.

Don’t get me wrong. I am a pro-life Catholic who just sponsored $10 for someone walking in a “Walk for Life” (all I could afford), I’m just being realistic. Rob is right. The only way to defeat abortion is to change attitudes.

One of the things that bother me about abortion is the way the women who work in the clinics lie to women who are considering it. They told my friend she might “feel the blues” after having it. She got it done and had nightmares for about a year. It does affect women and those femnazis lie about it.

Unfortunately, and not until it’s too late, do women get a grip on the fact that they’ve been duped, played for suckers, and realize they’ve murdered their own baby, will they ever get a clue. They should be angry, like when you try and get between a mama bear and her cubs! Call it feminism, or what it really is, the spirit of rebellion, which has blinded them to the truth, of the precious life they carried and destroyed.

There is a certain time in ones life where you ‘get it’. Call it maturity, getting your nose bloodied a few times or growing up, There is a point in time when people just figure things out. Remember when Roe vs Wade first came out, they kept talking about the woman who was impregnated by rape or the tired lady with her sixth kid who couldn’t take care of one more child, it seemed kind of relieving for the women.
But over the last few years, I ‘get it’ and see what legalized abortion has done to our nation. It isn’t until you realize what is being done to the innocents, almost 50 Million dead. and we did it ourselves, Hitler didn’t do it, Pol Pot didn’t do it, Stalin didn’t do it. America let it happen. The home of the free and the brave. Instead of praising women who have Downs syndrome children (Sara Palin). Our MSM has demonized her, they don’t want the Mom of a special child to be a hero, that would completely ruin abortion and its proponents. and god knows they don’t want to hear about God.
We took God out of the schools and the courthouses and now he is almost out of our lives, hanging on by a thread.
As a Catholic, I know that a large group of Catholics haven’t matured to the point where they will really look at abortion and their hearts. Why don’t they have the guts to say to God that maybe the abortion of his Son would have been better therefore he would not have had to die on the cross for all of us. Because what is the difference between the next abortion that takes place and the aborting of Gods son. Think of it, God put his only Son on the Cross to die for our sins, could abortion have been one of those sins? How about our ignoring the horror of abortion, is that even a much worse sin that a young lady who is ashamed and doesn’t know where to turn? God is ever merciful and I feel blessed that I know He would forgive that young lady. but how does He forgive America, the land He has given so much and when don’t even take care of the children that he would send us to make us strong and proud? If their really is a Hell as we think it is, I am sure the abortion providers proponents, and even those who turn their backs on these children, will most certainly be in the hottest place.
Maybe we aren’t grown up as a country yet, but isn’t it time? Isn’t it time to look at our bloated government who buys cars, houses, food, free lunches, tax credits for those who don’t work and say “Enough”!
And then they want us to have exercise programs for the kids of these poor people because they are obese! Have we had enough yet?
Aren’t you tired of being told by the government and the MSM that your not patriotic enough (Biden)? that you need to spread the wealth around? (you know who)
That your racist because you think a person should work and pay their own way (every Democrat)
You know what is really happening? Obama was not the change we were waiting for, WE were the change we were waiting for. And as much as I do not respect this President, he is going to bring about the change we want because when the huge, generous, patriotic Middle of America looks into the gaping Obama hole of socialism and immorality, and realizes that we are on the precipice of Hell on Earth, then, and only then, will this country be taken back and put back on the road charted by our Founders. This is our task, this is why we were put on Earth. Not to be heroes like the Founders but to give our world and its billions of people, one place where personal freedom and knowing the difference between right or wrong is still upheld. God did not put me on Earth to be a slave or to be subservient to a single man, he put me on Earth to be a Free man and to keep the road open for other Free Men and Women to follow. And that is what I am going to do.
(My apologies for the poor grammar and sentence construction. It just poured out of me. I didn’t even start the post to say all of this, it came from my inner soul)

The whole basis of abortion supporters is an opinion. It’s one persons opinion that it’s a life at this stage and it’s another persons opinion that it’s a life at that stage. No one has ever scientifically proven when life begins. Therefore this Country’s Government allows the MURDER of millions of Babies because of an “opinion”. How absolutely insane is that? I don’t care what religion you are if you even practice a religion. Murder is murder and taking a life for any other reason besides the defense and preservation of an innocent victim or the killing of an enemy combatant in war time is absolutely murder. We are worse than Hitlers Germany ever thought about being.

I don’t get this either. Liberals want to allow the murder of an innocent, unborn baby because a rapist rapes a Woman and gets her pregnant but they won’t support the death penalty for the rapist.

You people, are awesome, being an American Patriot, isn’t just caring about some documents written some 231 odd years ago. Its about your neighbor, your brother. Its about, the people, the people who care about the people, that’s what makes us so great. “WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES…”,us, each other, me, you, all of us who love freedom under stand. You people make me so proud to be an American.
Yet,It is an absolute tragedy that so many of our babes don’t have an opportunity to experience this love for life, and freedom, and liberty we enjoy. We must put an end to the death of our children. There is no reason Republican, Conservative, Protestant, and Catholic percentages aren’t at 100% anti-baby killing.

(Please don’t mistake the phrase, some doc., as if I ever actually take them lightly, and you people, obviously was not meant in any derogatory manner.)
