McCain: Cheney Endorses Spanish Inquisition Technique

NRA Convention

Jeffrey Goldberg in The Atlantic:

I stopped by to see John McCain this afternoon in his Senate office. I haven’t seen him for several months, and was glad to see that he seemed rested and ready, if not tan. He was in high spirits, and we talked for a while about the Obama Administration’s embrace of realpolitik, Pakistan, Iran, the whole nine yards. But first I asked him about Dick Cheney and his defense of Bush Administration torture policies. He told me of his fundamental disagreement with Cheney: “When you have a majority of Americans, seventy-something percent, saying we shouldn’t torture, then I’m not sure it helps for the Vice President to go out and continue to espouse that position,” he said. “But look, he’s free to talk. He’s a former Vice President of the United States. I just don’t see where it helps.”

And then he got acerbic: Cheney, he says, “believes that waterboarding doesn’t fall under the Geneva Conventions and that it’s not a form of torture. But you know, it goes back to the Spanish Inquisition.”

I’ll post more of what McCain said — including his critique of Obama’s speech — tomorrow.

I hope he cleared his remarks with Meghan “Perez Hilton” McCain, the true voice of the progressive wing of the GOP…

This is just shameful, undercutting the VP Cheney whom unlike Hussein is a patriot who loves America!

    Go away John McCain.

McCain is responsible for this mess. If he were a true PATRIOT, Obamie the Commie would have been painted RED and forced to run as a Marxist. How could a man who fought and suffered them allow this to happen,

If we knew, he did too. What an incredible failure. The public deserved to know the truth. He gave this stealth master a free pass to the White House.

  • Armando Garcia

Can some one point me to the donkey that nominated him in the first place, please.

  • BTJoe112

Wow! I wondered how he lost?
Thank you Mr McCain and Mr Powell for your service, But please do not ever call your self’s Republicans again.

I too voted for Palin and held my nose for McCain. While I strongly disagree with his positions on numerous issues including immigration I’ll cut him a little slack on the water boarding issue.

At the risk of a severe flaming I’ll just remind you all that on this issue McCain speaks with a certain authority that none of us (thank God) have … that of having been a POW and subjected to extremely harsh treatment.

I served two years under another Hanoi Hilton alum (he had 7+ years in that hell hole) and can not fathom the degree to which those men were mistreated.

So if McCain is critical of harsh interrogation tactics I’ll agree to disagree on the point but I give him a pass on this issue since he speaks from a point of view not many can.

You fuckin pussy, you have to be willfully ignorant to hold your position.

    • GRIZZ

Maybe so.However, now is not the time, especially in a time of war, politically and militarily,to open your mouth and spew this shit.I am with the STFU crowd.I am not attacking you.

“…You fuckin pussy, you have to be willfully ignorant to hold your position.”

I expected someone to flame me on this … tough shit.

You obviously have a problem with reading (and dissenting opinions) … I totally disagree with McCain’s position and yes I think he is a RINO … however I fully understand why he feels the way he does on the waterboarding issue.

I was there when these men (the POWs) came home after Viet Nam and worked with a number of them as we tried to get them back into the cockpit … they were frail, very frail. They had been through hell like you can not imagine. It left a lasting impression. Later, 1n 1979 I worked with one who actually had more time in captivity than McCain and we shared some beers and some tears over the (mis)treatment they received.

Right or wrong I will stand up for these POWs well earned right to express their opinions and will not be silenced.

Your quick resort to an ad hominid attack only illustrates your lack of understanding of the role of debate in a democracy.

      Grow up.

  • NMMI 83

It’s time for McLame to jump to the other side like his dear friend and collegue Specter. He is really no different than the Dems. He is always siding, covering and voting with them. He’s just a RINO.

    McLame STFU.

  • Tom in CO

    STFU mccain

It’s time to do a little weeding in the ‘Republican Party garden’ removing the east coast blue blood elites and RINO’s.

A third party is too tall an order to fill given the fact we are just about to be attacked.

    Take the Republican machine back.

It’s like two tanks on a battle field. Trying to build a new tank versus taking one is a lot harder to do. Move the RINO’s to the democrat party where they belong and build the Republican Party into a Juggernaut!

Any ideas on how we can do this?

I love Pat’s idea to ‘call out’ the scared ‘conservative rich people’ and force them to choose sides, PUBLICALLY.

Either we do this now, or it is not going to get done. We are out of time.

For howling headbanging goatraping moonworshippers, I endorse not only Spanish Inquisition torture techniques, but also Soviet, Pinochet, Apache, and Oriental torture techniques – anything that keeps Americans safe from the pigs.
