WASHINGTON — President George W. Bush’s $1.2 billion plan to develop cars powered by hydrogen fuel cells was eliminated by President Barack Obama last week, saving $100 million a year.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu said the government prefers to target more immediate energy-saving solutions.

“The probability of deploying hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the next 10 to 20 years is low,” Energy Department spokesman Tom Welch said in an interview.

If fuel cells are ever really viable for cars, they will run on hydrocarbons – not hydrogen. It’s really tough to beat diesel engines in terms of overall thermodynamic efficiency – plus they’re already here.

precisely. there is some great developments going on with diesels at the moment.

Same thing as oil ehh, It can’t be done in 24 hrs so why bother.

What a bunch of fucknuts running the show.

Looks like he is also trying to cut off ACTIVE folks from talking on cell phones in a crisis.

Let’s put some pieces on the table…

Honda has a vehicle called the ‘Clarity’ in consumers hand’s today. it is a functioning fuel cell car, that runs on hydrogen, not a gas fuel cell car.

The state run auto companies, GM and Chrysler are years away from such products.

Lada’a and zil’s, we are going to have to buy fucking shit cars from the collectivists if we do not stop this.

For bit on the Clarity from our friends at Top Gear:

Stock up and keep it dry……remember we own the guns and there are at least 80 million of us…….that’s larger than any army in the world!!

Actually, hydrogen is quite feasible and not that complicated. The reason OBOOMBA killed it is because you need a really efficient power source to produce the hydrogen and the obvious source is nuclear. Also, you would have to let the oil companies be the delivery system for the hydrogen as they already have the infrastructure in place. The enviro-Nazis would never allow the construction of say 40 nuclear power plants in the USA. That would be just WRONG! Employing Americans to build those sinister Nuke plants “Moo-ha-ha-ha!!!” (That is my attempt at a evil/sinister laugh!) BMW already has a hydrogen car developed and ready to sell. Can’t let those evil oil thugs who employ hundreds of thousands of Americans get into that game can we? So, in less than 10 years, we will have outdated battery powered cars here and the French of all people will be cruising in their shiny Hydro-powered Automobiles and we will have the same arguments and complaints that have been made for the last 50 years in regards to our non-existant rail system, which by the way, the Euros will also power by…Hydrogen!
We are doomed to be a third world country if we allow these idiots to run the country!

Fuel Cell Cars do not make sense. Mainly because it takes so much energy to create hydrogen by electrolysis process and then energy to compress it into a very expensive tank wrapped in carbon fiber that is HUGE. This huge tank in turn that holds about 95L of Hydrogen that will propel your $100,000+ vehicle 300 miles. It would have been nice if the money was shifted towards plug in hybrid development instead. Also hydrogen at government subsidized prices are like $5-$10 for about 4 liters. I wouldn’t be able afford the car or the fuel!
Also GM and Ford have fuel cell vehicles (not in production) I’m not sure you can call Honda’s Clarity a production vehicle since nobody can buy one.
