Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee that will consider Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination to the Supreme Court, said on Sunday she should apologize for a comment she made positing that “a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.â€
“It is troubling. It’s inappropriate and I hope she’ll apologize,†Graham told “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace. “If I had said something like that – or someone with my background and profile [had] – we wouldn’t be talking about this nomination going forward…. she’s got to prove to me that if I find myself in court with a Latina woman, in front of her, I’d get a fair shake, and that’s up to her to do.â€
The comment in question comes from a 2001 speech later turned into a law review article, and Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.), a Judiciary Committee member appearing opposite Graham on the the morning talk show, said it should be considered in the context of Sotomayor’s long career on the bench.
“It’s fair to ask her about the [comment], but she has a long, solid record to show that she’s fair and not biased,†Specter said.
