Politico:

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge is seriously considering a run for the Senate for the GOP nomination against Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.), according to Roll Call:

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge is considering running for the Republican Senate nomination in his home state, according to a senior Republican aide with knowledge of the situation.

National and Keystone State Republicans have been publicly and privately urging Ridge to consider a Senate bid since Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.) announced earlier this week that he was switching parties and would run for re-election as a Democrat in 2010.

Specter said he switched parties because he could not win a primary against conservative former Rep. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), who is popular with the party’s base but whom many national Republicans believe cannot win the general election — especially against a 29-year incumbent who is viewed favorably and gets high marks from Democrats. Ridge’s moderate politics and national profile would make him a more viable candidate in the general election.

A former six-term House Member, Ridge is still popular in Pennsylvania, where he served as governor from 1995 to 2001. He left office to be President George W. Bush’s first secretary of Homeland Security but retired from the Cabinet in 2005 and joined the private sector.

The Republican efforts to recruit Ridge indicate they’re actively looking to find a more moderate alternative to former GOP Congressman Pat Toomey. Both Ridge and Philadelphia-area Congressman Jim Gerlach have been mentioned in the last week as potential primary challengers.

The GOP is nothing more than a bunch of cheap whores…. compromising their principles for someone they perceive as a moderate. And there is no such person. You are either conservative or liberal. Moderates go which ever way the wind blows…. which is liberalism.

I think Ridge is an okay person he isn’t another Sphincter, but if I lived in PA. Toomey would get my vote. From the sound of it, the problem for Toomey is going to be that the Republican Party won’t support him and they will fight to exclude him.

If Repub’s go that route, they could left holding an empty bag.

A tough one. Spector will get most of the democrat money.

Obama says he will campaign for Spector. I’ll believe that when I see it.

There are a lot of democrats that had intended to run against Spector or Toomey in the general. They may still do so.

I don’t think Ridge wants to run. He doesn’t need the aggravation at his age.

    Uh yeah.

More Bullshit shenanigans by the Republican party.

So, what will you idiots say when you gift wrap the election for Specter by having Ridge lose?

Guess we’ll never know if a conservative can win if you won’t let them run.

We’ll just have to rely on your oh so wonderful opinions, and we know how accurate they have been.

Fuck the Republicans that are in control.
