AP: The military said in a statement that the shooting occurred about 2 p.m. at the base which is near Baghdad International Airport. The toll was the highest for U.S. personnel in a single attack since April 10, when a suicide truck driver killed five American soldiers with a blast near a police headquarters in the northern city of Mosul.

    Death to the Traitor. :gun:

  • Steady

Lets see if the murderer is a Muslim. If the press doesn’t report the background of the murderer, it is a good bet that he is.

There is no such thing as PTSD. Sorry but, if your fucked up after you were fucked up before.

Oh my recruiter lied to me, I just wanted money for college. Fucking children. Even prior to 9/11 we averaged a conflict with rounds coming down range every 3 years. Anyone that failed to see that should never have graduated high school because they would have flunked history.

    • mindy abraham

I am not in the military, but I would not doubt the existance of PTSD. War, even if done by a well trained person can be traumatic. I’m not saying that’s his excuse, but I do not doubt that it exists

    • John

 Mindy PTSD is an excuse mostly propogated by the left wing media to explain away bad behavior. ADD ADHD PTSD= I can be an ass and get away with it. Many veterans who have seen combat myself included come back and lead normal lives yet there is never any story on us its the .00001% of asshats that come back wanting an excuse as to draw a VA pension.

    • ToeTagger

CBL, my father entered the Navy at 15, served on a destroyer in WWII that saw plenty of heavy action, and suffered PTSD for many decades afterward. It IS a valid diagnosis. Fuck you.

  • Jonny Mordant

There’s not enough information on the incident to really form an opinion yet, but I’ll put this out there as food for thought “If you’ve ever met a “Stress Clinic” counselor before, then you can understand how even a perfectly sane individual could be driven over the edge”…

Im going to go ahead and guess youre not a psychologist.

    • CBL

I would make a pretty bad psychologist. My response to anyone that came in would be, quit your crying and suck it the fuck up.

    • Hardball1911

Well, I’ll throw this out there.

CBL, it is one thing to say “Suck it the fuck up and drive on.” and it is a completely different story to state that PTSD does not exist.

It does exist, and it is dealt with differently by every individual who has been in combat. I can agree with John in stating that most of us just… move on, while there are those asshats who dwell on the bullshit portions of PTS, which brings in the D.

If you are a decent human being, and have been forced to kill another human being, regardless of circumstances, you will experience the PTS portion at least. It may not lead to the disorder portion, but you certainly deal with the PTS.

Those of us who deal with the PTS, and drive on, have a tendency to not understand those who allow it to get to the disorder state. And hence, our tolerance is not as high as it might be otherwise.

But, like most here who have dealt with the PTS, I can still see the very first person lined up in my sights. I can still see every one of them, and still could relive each situation if I allowed myself to sink back into that state of mind. Having said that, I don’t dwell on it. I have “sucked it the fuck up and drove on” as CBL put it. I wake up with the mentality that “today is today, and I will deal with the present”. That’s just my method. Others may have varied methods.

  • John

Oh yeah this asshat couldnt handle the stress at Liberty when the PX, Pizza Hut, Burger king, movie theaters, 4 gyms and all pools were closed. This douchebag probably never even left the wire and was deemed a “Fobbit.” Anyone whos been in country or to FOB Liberty will know what I’m talkin about.

    • Somefed

Haha…so true we use to risk life and limb just to get to Burger King when it first opened back in 04. Nothing like driving from Camp war Eagle in Sadar City to BIAP for some fast food.

PTSD is real….Just depends on the person and how they deal with it. Most of the people I see walking out of the VA are some POG Mother fuckers who think they had it bad over there and never left the FOB. Dumb fucks get 90% for mental shit….Shit bag is a shit bag.

“There is no such thing as PTSD”???????

In the Civil War it was called “A Soldiers Heart”
In WWI it was called “Shell Shock”
In WWII it was called “Battle Fatigue”

I HATE the label PTS- disorder. It is REAL and
the NATURAL response ANY NORMAL human has when put under life threatening stress for long periods of time.

If left untreated the ripple effect is devastating.
I have met way too many noble soldiers returning that deserve better treatment.

    • CBL

I must be abnormal, along with the 8 other guys I served with in the Marines that I still talk to. :???:

PTSD is real, everyone gets it who gets in the shit, just some people it doesn’t stick with or they shake it real easy and some folks can’t cut it loose for years.

I used to think PTSD was bullshit myself, the occasional dream was nothing… Then I quit drinking and rolling around the bottom of the bottle and everything went to shit. I got my grip on it now but saying PTSD doesn’t exist? Notsomuch.

  • http://ftfreedom.blogspot.com/ littlefox (Honeymoons for Heroes)

As for this story…I am VERY curious to know the truth and nationality/religion of the shooter.

    FYI,

Here is an article that posted moments ago here out of the local paper in Jacksonville (Camp Lejeune).

By AMANDA HICKEY and LINDELL KAY
    May 12, 2009 – 6:13PM
     UPDATED AT 7:02 P.M.
A Navy commander stationed at Camp Lejeune was one of five people allegedly killed by an Army sergeant in Baghdad on Monday.
Cmdr. Charles Keith Springle, 52, of Wilmington, a licensed clinical social worker assigned to the 55th Medical Company, worked at the Community Counseling Center aboard Camp Lejeune.
He died Monday at Camp Liberty, Iraq, during a shooting incident, according to a U.S. Navy Web site.
Army Sgt. John Russell, 44, a communications specialist from Sherman, Texas, has been charged with five counts of premeditated murder and one count of aggravated assault in connection with the killings of Cmdr. Springle and four other service members at the Liberty Combat Stress Cetner on Camp Liberty, Baghdad, at approximately 2 p.m. Monday, said Lt. Kathy Ferrero, Multi -National Corps-Iraq spokesperson.
Russell who first joined the Army in 1988, is assigned to the 370th Engineer Company, 54th Engineering Battalion in Bamberg, Germany.
It’s unclear if Russell targeted his victims. Officials said the slain service members included an Army doctor and a Navy doctor who worked at the clinic and three enlisted soldiers.
Russell remains in custody in Iraq.
The Army Times reports that according to an Army official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, preliminary reports show Russell was unarmed when he was escorted to the combat stress clinic at Camp Liberty, a sprawling U.S. base near Baghdad’s international airport. Once inside, he got into a verbal altercation with the staff and was asked to leave. Russell and his escort got back into their vehicle and began to drive away, according to the Army official.
At some point during the drive, Russell got control of his escort’s weapon and ordered the escort out of the vehicle, the Army official said. The soldier then drove back to the clinic, walked in and began shooting, the official said.
During a press briefing Monday afternoon at the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Robert Gates expressed his “horror and deep regret” over the shooting, adding that officials are still in the process of gathering information on exactly what happened.
“Such a tragic loss of life at the hands of our own forces is a cause of great and urgent concern,” he said.
Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he did not know whether or not Russell had been deployed multiple times, according to the Army Times. However, he said, the tragedy occurred while service members were seeking help at the clinic.
“It does speak to me for the need for us to redouble our efforts in terms of dealing with the stress (of combat),” Mullen said. “It also speaks to the issues of multiple deployments (and) increasing dwell time.”
