Thirteen cases of bubonic plague have been recorded in eastern Libya, near the border with Egypt, Health Minister Mohamad Hijazi told AFP on Wednesday, stressing the situation was under control.
“Thirteen cases of the plague have been recorded in a village 30 kilometres (20 miles) away from Tobruk. Eleven people have already (been treated and) left hospital,” he said, without reporting any deaths.
Libyan media have spoken of between one and three fatalities.
“The situation is under control. We are leading a massive campaign to clean up and disinfect the place,” said Hijazi, explaining that the illness was caused by rising rat numbers attracted by livestock being reared near homes.
He said cowsheds had been destroyed and a foreign pest control firm sent to eradicate the rats, in an operation to be supervised by a World Health Organisation (WHO) representative and a French expert.
Hijazi said the illness had previously hit Libya in the 1970s and 1980s.
The plague is “primarily a disease of rodents and their fleas, which can infect humans. It is transmitted between rodents by rodent fleas, and can be transmitted to people when infected rodent fleas bite them,” according to WHO.
“Plague is a very severe disease in people, with case fatality rates of 50-60 percent if left untreated.” (AFP)

Fourth seal is opened : a pale horse appears, its rider is called Death
{7} When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” {8} I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

The interesting thing is that back on March 30, 2009, it was reported that $134.5bn was the amount left in the TARP fund.

At least 40 al-Qaeda fanatics died horribly after being struck down with the disease that devastated Europe in the Middle Ages.
The killer bug, also known as the plague, swept through insurgents training at a forest camp in Algeria, North Africa. It came to light when security forces found a body by a roadside.
The victim was a terrorist in AQLIM (al-Qaeda in the Land of the Islamic Maghreb), the largest and most powerful al-Qaeda group outside the Middle East.
It trains Muslim fighters to kill British and US troops.
Now al-Qaeda chiefs fear the plague has been passed to other terror cells - or Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.
One security source said: “This is the deadliest weapon yet in the war against terror. Most of the terrorists do not have the basic medical supplies needed to treat the disease.
“It spreads quickly and kills within hours. This will be really worrying al-Qaeda.”

More fear to pass laws that will make us “safe”, yet again taking away more rights and freedoms from us. This ploy they’re using is really getting old, but like most criminals, using the same tactics over and over make you lazy, and you make more mistakes, and eventually you’ll get caught.

The real questions to be asked is this:
Was this a natural outbreak or an induced one?
Were these people terrorists planning an attack or ‘technicians’ making a weapon OR was this merely a few unfortunates?
That is important.
Also, as has been stated, fear is a weapon. This could be part of a tactic to increase fear.
Bubonic Plaque, in its natural form, is treatable IF there is efficient and effective medical care. I don’t suggest is is a case of the sniffles but it is not a Dr. Tripps (from the King book I think) or a ‘I am Legend’ sort of disease.
Actually Bubonic Plague is found in the United States on a yearly basis. It was just recently found in New Mexico.

Acording to the CDC, an average of 13 cases per year are found in the United States, with most of the cases in New Mexico and Arizona.
The reason this is probably getting coverage is that it is a “cluster”, but looking over the CDC website, this happens from time to time.
BTW, with proper medical treatement, this can be cured however, a vaccine for prevention is no longer marketed in the United States.
I would be more concerned about Hanta Virus or some odd strain of Smallpox popping up. Anthrax and Bubonic Plague are potentially natural.
Now, if there is a sudden increase in a certain area…that would be cause for concern since it is possible you are looking at a ’stupidterroristtrick’ as in “What’s in the box, Abdul? Don’t touch th…”
