Pushback on GM/Chrysler… Dems express ‘growing concern’
By AMIE PARNES
House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer and Reps. Chris Van Hollen and Daniel Maffei have circulated this letter today …
… to Obama expressing “growing concern” with the closures of GM and Chrysler dealerships across the country. The lawmakers say they’re asking for a “compelling justification as to how closing healthy dealerships will make the automakers more financially sound. The lawmakers are asking for lawmakers to sign this letter by 5p.m. today.
Full letter below:
Dear President Obama:
We are writing to express our concerns about General Motors’ and Chrysler’s decision to close profitable automobile dealerships across the country, and urge you to ask GM and Chrysler to delay final action on proposed closures pending further review of the decision to consolidate dealerships and the process by which Chrysler and GM selected the dealerships to close.
Closing these dealerships will put over 100,000 jobs at risk at a time when our country is shedding jobs at an alarming rate. We also question the criteria being used to determine which dealerships should be closed and the fundamental fairness involved in this effort. It is our view that the market rather than leaving it up to the manufacturers whose poor leadership contributed to their demise. Furthermore, we believe car dealers will be key players in any effort to revive the American auto industry.
We believe the dealerships are one of the auto industry’s key sources of strength and the manufacturers should continue to honor their agreements and contracts. The dealerships, and their more than 1 million employees, form personal relationships with customers that often contribute to brand loyalty and will be key to General Motors’ and Chrysler’s recovery following this economic downturn. While we understand the desire to reduce the number of unprofitable dealerships, no one has yet sufficiently explained the need to close profitable dealerships.
We recognize that efforts by your Auto Task Force prevented the total liquidation of General Motors and Chrysler, as well as their dealership networks. We commend your efforts to help these businesses survive these challenging economic times.
However, we are concerned that manufacturers are closing profitable dealerships to circumvent current contracts which could require expensive buy-outs under normal conditions. We are also concerned about allegations that dealers that have previously stood up for their rights against the manufacturers are being targeted by these closures. We believe that the forced closures of profitable dealerships needs to be scrutinized by the Task Force to prevent additional future financial loses to General Motors and Chrysler and job loses across the United States
We may consider legislative proposals to ensure that dealers and their employees are treated fairly, and we look forward to your timely response.

They just want it both ways. Notice how they said nothing until the deals were really done.
So, they supported their president by staying quiet and letting him do what he wants. Now they are worried about the polls and their voters.
Too little too late. Vote all of the scumbags out who didn’t do their duty and said and did nothing except to fall in line like the sheep they are under Hussein. They are a disgrace.
Gee, I guess this whole “running two major car companies” bit is a bit harder than it looks, eh Barry?
Closing profitable dealerships is the height of idiocy. I have bought my last two vehicles from the same dealership for the last 15 years. The very notion of cutting profitable dealerships while propping up money-losing “green” technology just confounds me.
It shouldn’t confound you.
I just attended an Organizing for America event in Worcester were the twenty two persons in attendace figured they could cure health care problems in MA and nationwide merely by supporting Obama (call it the Obamawand). Issues like corruption, malpractice insurance that forces doctors and hospitals out of business, a medicare system that is open for corruption and graft on bad days and simple incompetence on good ones and and a general ignorance on how hospitals, medical insurance and doctors work (it’s all Wall Street and greed).
They also felt that health care around the world was much better than here. One individual (who thought Canadian healthcare was better than health care in America) thought America should model itself after WHO (World Health Organization for those of you in Rio Linda).
You are dealing with two issues here:
1. Ignorance
2. Childish Behavior- AIAO (adults in age only)
Every time I tried make people ask the question about who was going to pay for this the conversation either veered or I was told to ‘Oh, shut up about that.”
You are seeing the Sheeple and not seeing the sheeple herders.
Sadly, I think it is going to take something horrendous to wake the Sheeple up and many will not survive the event.
At the end of the second paragraph it should read:
…were not issues to be discussed or bothered with.
Tim, a lot of us have a very bad feeling that something horrendous in terms of an attack on America is going to happen.
Hmm, me thinks “growing concern” = mid-term election dilemma.
Should have read the memoirs of Admiral Yamamoto you scumbag Demoncrats, you have this “growing concern” because the working classes will help the helpless but have grave reservations helping the clueless which translates into Congressional seats.
OH NO..they are not backing out of this now! This is their baby and they darn well are going to live with it…AND those tin can cars too..every one of them should be forced to drive one. Just think how easy they will be to force off the road…um..sorry officer ..I didn’t see it…it’s so small. Gosh..I get so excited just thinking about it.
The Republicans should bring up a bill requiring all members of Congress and their families to use whatever health care system that congress comes up with for the rest of us. And their nice little padded system would be scrapped.. Let’s see the Dems shoot that one down.
The dems only concern is if they will still get free cars.
I’m in Maryland, and that douche Steny Hoyer is a snake of the worst kind. That piece of trash is a racist, manipulative a-hole. Simply look at what he’s said about Michael Steele in the past couple years. He’s also Pelosi’s pet. That’ll tell you everything.
Those tin can cars could be a gift from God. Obama supporters may as well have “I voted for stupid” tattooed on their foreheads because those cars are going to single them out.
It should be crystal clear to all by now that all actions taken by the monkey eared marxist in the “house” have nothing to do with what is right for our country. It is about……..
1)paying his election debt to the union thugs
2)Making those evil capitalist pay for their sins,
past and present.
3)establishing himself as Americas “Supreme Leader”
with absolute and unchallenged power.
4)Making sure all Americans will be forced to drive
under powered and over priced tin can death traps
Anyone else hear that Obama supporters have been mysteriously disappearing?
