Press TV:

A top Reformist body, made up of influential clerics, has asked for authorization to hold a pro-Mousavi rally on Saturday in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

The Association of Combatant Clerics (Majma’-e Rowhaniyun-e Mobarez) made the request via a letter to Tehran’s governor’s office, Kalameh website reported on Thursday.

The rally is scheduled to be held on Saturday from 4 to 7 pm (1230 to 1530 GMT) from Enqelab (Revolution) Square to Azadi (Freedom) Square in protest at the results of the country’s 10th presidential elections.

According to the website, defeated presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi will address protesters. Former reformist president Mohammad Khatami and the members of the Association of Combatant Clerics (ACC) will reportedly participate in the rally as well.

Iranian authorities have banned rallies, but Mousavi’s supporters have held daily silent marches since Friday’s disputed election.

Friday’s presidential election, which saw incumbent Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad re-elected to a second term, has given rise to mass rallies by hundreds of thousands of Mousavi supporters — who reject election results as ‘charade’.

Some of the demonstrations have turned violent, resulting in the deaths of at least eight people in the Iranian capital. Many others are reported to have sustained injuries.

Mahmoud Rabi’ee, Mousavi’s campaign adviser in the north-eastern province of Golestan, denounced the recent unrests, saying that the rioters are “not supporters of, or linked to Mousavi or his camp.”

A groundswell of opposition is forming. While I do not believe that Mousavi’s positions vis a’vis the nuclear program are substantially different than Ahmadinejad’s a change in leadership away from the hard line currently in control would be welcome.

My perception is the Iranian people in general want a life style somewhat more secular than that being imposed on them by the clerics … perhaps some even long for the (western) lifestyle they had under the Shah.

I think the US would be wise to covertly ‘stir the pot’ (perhaps in concert with the French who still have some influence in the region) towards the goal of regime change. Of course the Russians will want to back Ahmadinejad because he is a customer for their weapons programs.

One quid pro quo strategy is to approach Mousavi and offer our support in return for a promise to halt Iranian interference in Iraq and an agreement to halt work on nuclear weapons.

You can bet the Israelis are watching this with rapt attention. The minute they see no possibility of ousting Ahmadinejad they’ll saddle up and attack the nuclear facilities.

I have been waiting for that a long time. I have nothing against the Iranian people, just the clerics and the leaders. :gun: I just wander if Isreal is going to really do it.

“The Iranian Intelligence Ministry on Thursday claimed to have foiled an Israeli-linked terror plot to plant bombs in mosques and other crowded places in Teheran during last week’s presidential election. ”

Whoever the ayatollahs allow to run in an election, will be a tool of the ayatollahs. Get rid of the mullahs if you want change in Iran. I believe that Moussavi is a founding member of hezbollah as well. This means nothing, until the mullahs are pulled down and hanged.

When “top” iranian clerics join a revolution, you can bet it will be an islamic revolution. Moussavi is no different than Ahmadinejead. :gun:
