Political Punch:

ABCNews’ Jake Tapper & Matt Jaffe report

The Obama administration’s disputes with government watchdogs do not end with fired Inspector General Gerald Walpin. Behind the scenes, the Treasury Department is embroiled in a disagreement with Neil Barofsky, the watchdog for the $700 billion government bailout Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP.

The dispute was revealed in a letter that Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, sent on Wednesday to Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, first reported by the Los Angeles Times’ Tom Hamburger and Peter Wallsten.

As part of his duties performing audits and keeping tracking TARP dollars, Barofsky asked the Treasury Department for some documents about a financial institution receiving tens of billions in taxpayer bailout dollars. The Treasury Department refused to hand them over, “on a specious claim of attorney-client privilege,” Grassley wrote. “It is my further understanding that this disagreement then escalated into broader questions about whether SIGTARP is subject to your direct supervision and direction, which may have been referred outside Treasury for an independent legal opinion.”

“The ability of Inspectors General to secure agency records subject to audit or investigation is essential to ensure the integrity and reliability of their work on behalf of Congress and the American People,” Grassley wrote. “The Inspectors General were created by Congress as a means to combat waste, fraud, and abuse and to be independent watchdogs ensuring that federal agencies are held accountable for their actions.”

“We will review the letter and respond to the Senator before making comment as is our practice,” a Treasury official said.
Barofsky’s office had no comment.

The subject of the disagreement between Geithner and Barofsky remains unclear, but there is something of a paper trail.

In a memo dated April 7, Barofsky – referring to his office under the name SIGTARP, Special Inspector General for TARP — clearly felt compelled to defend the independence of his office.

“SIGTARP believes that the Emergency Economic Stability Act of 2008…provides that SIGTARP is an independent entity within Treasury, that SIGTARP is not subject to the Secretary’s supervision, and that attorney-client privilege is not a bar to SIGTARP’s access to Treasury’s records or information,” Barofsky wrote to Geithner at the time.

In a statement, Grassley said, ”The grassroots is furious about the way TARP dollars have been used and what looks like a lack of accountability for this massive infusion of tax dollars. It’s added injury to hear about the Treasury Department putting up hurdles to slow down the work of the watchdog who’s supposed to track the money. One of the biggest lessons of the last year is that the public deserves more transparency and, in turn, accountability from New York and Washington.”

Barofsky is not the only inspector general who has been butting heads with the administration. Walpin, the former Inspector General of the Corporation for National and Community Service, was fired last week by President Obama, a move that incited criticism on Capitol Hill from both sides of the aisle, including from Grassley and Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Missouri.

THe same old song and dance…just a different set of slugs in charge.

The justice department SHOULD be looking into this about the IG’s. But, as we all know, that department is ran by the White House. Things are ramping up 100 fold it seems lately, and it’s scary as hell to think what’s next.

    • Scoot

We need a new Independence Day…..soon

      Ain’t that the truth!
I don’t recall so many people being so angry at the shenanigans going on in DC.
It’s only a matter of time before this anger moves to the next stage. Some of us are already there.

      Ditto that :!: :gun:

O’s crew is hiding something and they might be on the edge of getting caught in some big time corruption.

These I.G.’s could possibly be one of the most important weapons in bringing the “Bi-sexual-Moor-Usurper” to his knees.

One possible scenario, TARP money found it’s way to the pockets of some MSM types & there’s a paper trail of it, hence the nearly slavish media coverage.

Remember Saddam buying off the European Media with “Oil for Food” cash? TARP might be the U.S. equivalent.

Given what the Bi-sexual-Moor-Usurper has already done, it’s not at all far fetched.

    • LCpl. Alexander

O’s crew have been hiding shit since before the election. From Ayers, to Frank Marshall Davis, to Jeremiah Wright, to Tony Rezko, to his birth certificate, to his college transcripts, to his islamic upbringing, to his participation in the suing of banks to force them to give out subprime loans to applicants who couldnt pay them back, which led to our economic collapse. This guy is a professional liar, and hider.

    • mike3481

      Agreed.

But Obama’s people have never had to deal with something like the Inspectors General. Everyone in government fears these guys and with good reason, ask any 4-star General, these Inspectors General can end anyone’s career in government.

At this point in time I believe that when Obama fired Gerald Walpin for ending Kevin Johnson’s ability to get Federal funds, he, Obama, really fucked-up.

I can’t imagine any Republican in Congress getting re-elected if they don’t call bullshit on this. At least petition the SCOTUS and see if they’ll take a look at it if Congress won’t.

If the Inspectors General start getting tough, putting pressure on Congress, there could be some politically fatal blow-back to the Administration.

Anyways, that’s all I got for now, I just dropped my reading glasses & broke them halfway though this, hope the comment makes some sense. Now I gotta fix ‘em.

Off topic again, or is it? Somehow all this crap blends together.

Obama and the democrats have the US government in a stated of anarchy.

Complete lawlessness in less that 6 months.

  • http://snooperreport.com Mark Harvey (aka Snooper)

This is EXACTLY what the enemies within want but this isn’t what they wanted as a response. They didn’t count on people NOT rolling over.

  • Sully

Can’t wait for Barry’s “I Am Not A Crook” moment.
It’s coming… hopefully not at the business end of a bayonet.

    • mike3481

“hopefully not at the business end of a bayonet.”

Actually, I’m good either way.

    • mike3481

Sully, in the nearly 2 decades that I’ve listened to Rush, one of the constants I hear from him is that the Left will always over-reach at every opportunity.

And I think we may have just seen a perfect example of that.

There’s no way I’m letting this go, I’m gonna hammer this issue ’til I no longer draw breath.

The Inspectors General, are in essence, a sacred trust between the American Citizens and the elected Government.

The firing (without cause) of Inspector General Gerald Walpin simply cannot go unchallenged.

    • Sully

Well let me clarify Mike… Hopefully *for him*
      lol

I’m not a Rush listener… Maybe twice in 20 years. Not for any reason other than I find it hard to listen to anyone that long.
Anyway, he’s right about over-reaching. That’s been true of power-grabbers for centuries and Barry and his band of thieves certainly match that description.

  • Ivan the Kafir

This tyrant will allow NO ACCOUNTABILITY whatsoever!!! Whatever falls out of his ass automatically becomes law whether we like it or not. He refuses to explain what he’s up to and refuses to give any time for debate. He just shoves us into the cattle cars and sends us off to Auschwitz.

Just imagine if an employee acted like that! Would he not get fired immediately?!

  • http://www.accdf.com aboutTObegin

this is what happens when the corrupt take power through the PAID OFF MSMs! no way for the public to verify the votes, just trust the MSM and now we are all paying for it.

I can’t believe Hilldog hasn’t explained to Barry that the best way to overcome those who are creating problems for you, is to have them commit suicide. It worked for her and Slick Willy

They’re doing it already so i’ve read.(I don’t remember the link)The young USA officer with classified info on the one’s passport documents. He “shot himself” in NW DC about 3 or 4 months ago.

It’s on P.Geller’s site,”Oh my God, now they’re killing people!” I’de post it,but gotta run.

  • Txgroundart

Rush is right, again. Bullies always keep pushing till somebody pushes back. Only question is will the sheeple wake up before the dollar crashes, or after?

  • MustangSandy

What I want to know is – where is the outrage here? Everyone sits at their computers and comments on various blogs but what are you actually doing about? Two mornings ago I just spent the morning rush hour time with 10 people from the Patriotic Resistance on the busiest intersection in the state of Idaho. Time to take it to the streets! 4 day notice and 10 people showed. Next time it will be more! And more the next time! We had good solid support from most passerbys – this encourages other people by seeing others willing to stand up…you have to start somewhere…

Me and my N.AL regional leader will have a booth set up at the Huntsville Tea Party on July 4th for ACTIVE recruiting. Come by and see us!
