RALEIGH, N.C. – A North Carolina man trained in Pakistan and Afghanistan has been charged along with six of his alleged recruits with conspiring to support terrorism and traveling overseas to participate in “violent jihad,” according to an indictment unsealed Monday.

Daniel Patrick Boyd, 39, and the six other men were arrested Monday and made their first appearances in Raleigh, charged with providing material support to terrorism.

“These charges hammer home the point that terrorists and their supporters are not confined to the remote regions of some far away land but can grow and fester right here at home,” U.S. Attorney George E.B. Holding said in a statement. He declined further comment.

The indictment said Boyd, a U.S. citizen, trained in Afghanistan and fought there between 1989 and 1992 against the Soviet Union before returning to the United States. Court documents charged that Boyd, also known as ‘Saifullah,’ encouraged others to engage in jihad.

Two of the suspects are Daniel Patrick Boyd’s sons: Zakariya Boyd, 20 and Dylan Boyd, 22. The others are Anes Subasic, 33; Mohammad Omar Aly Hassan, 22; and Ziyad Yaghi, 21.

Hysen Sherifi, 24, a native of Kosovo and a U.S. legal permanent was also charged. in the case. He was the only person arrested who was not a U.S. citizen.

All were residents of North Carolina, but it wasn’t immediately known where they lived. It was not immediately known if they had attorneys. No attorneys for the men were listed in court records.

The indictment claims Boyd traveled to Israel in 2007 with several of the defendants, hoping to engage in “violent jihad.” The attempt was unsuccessful, though, and the men returned home, officials said.

Boyd was also accused of trying to raise money last year to fund others’ travel overseas to fight. One of the men, Hysen Sharifi, allegedly went to Kosovo to engage in violent jihad, according to the indictment, but it’s unclear if he did any actual fighting.

Several of the defendants, including Boyd, were also charged with practicing military tactics on a private property in Caswell County in June and July of this year.

implied in the story is that this pole smoker would kill americans. I hope he makes nice boyfriends in prison.
having said that what exactly is ” practicing military tactics”, why is it a crime, and didnt that include PAINTBALL for goodness sake in a case a few years back? WONDER WHY THE GOVT WOULDNT WANT FOLKS PLAYING PAINTBALL…
the tyrants of europe also forbade the peasants to train in matters military, and to own weapons. there is nothing new under the sun. for example, in the past few days we have had dick durbin on tv lamenting the lack of ‘ common sense ” gun control laws, bloomberg et al warning us of concealed carry and ’60 minutes ‘ doing a hit piece on the 2nd amendment and gunshows.. now i wonder why THAT was?
watch as, ala the recent HOMELAND SECURITY report, terror and GUNS will be linked… might as well link a combustion engine and shoelaces also.

Thank God somebody is paying attention to terrorism at home. It will be interesting to see what bigwig islamic lawyers come out of the woodwork to defend these poor muslim boys who are obviously being discriminated against… :???:
Homeland security is going to become a very difficult task in the near future if this video is correct… http://homelandsecurityus.com/?p=2959

National Level Exercise 2009 (NLE 09) is scheduled for July 27 through July 31, 2009. NLE 09 will be the first major exercise conducted by the United States government that will focus exclusively on terrorism prevention and protection, as opposed to incident response and recovery.
NLE 09 is designated as a Tier I National Level Exercise. Tier I exercises (formerly known as the Top Officials exercise series or TOPOFF) are conducted annually in accordance with the National Exercise Program (NEP), which serves as the nation’s exercise program for planning, organizing, conducting and evaluating national level exercises. The NEP was established to provide the U.S. government, at all levels, exercise opportunities to prepare for catastrophic crises ranging from terrorism to natural disasters.
NLE 09 is a White House directed, Congressionally- mandated exercise that includes the participation of all appropriate federal department and agency senior officials, their deputies, staff and key operational elements. In addition, broad regional participation of state, tribal, local, and private sector is anticipated. This year the United States welcomes the participation of Australia, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom in NLE 09.
    EXERCISE FOCUS
NLE 09 will focus on intelligence and information sharing among intelligence and law enforcement communities, and between international, federal, regional, state, tribal, local and private sector participants.
The NLE 09 scenario will begin in the aftermath of a notional terrorist event outside of the United States, and exercise play will center on preventing subsequent efforts by the terrorists to enter the United States and carry out additional attacks. This scenario enables participating senior officials to focus on issues related to preventing terrorist events domestically and protecting U.S. critical infrastructure.
NLE 09 will allow terrorism prevention efforts to proceed to a logical end (successful or not), with no requirement for response or recovery activities.
NLE 09 will be an operations-based exercise to include: activities taking place at command posts, emergency operation centers, intelligence centers and potential field locations to include federal headquarters facilities in the Washington D.C. area, and in federal, regional, state, tribal, local and private sector facilities in FEMA Region VI, which includes the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
    EXERCISE OBJECTIVES
Through a comprehensive evaluation process, the exercise will assess prevention and protection capabilities both nationally and regionally. Although NLE 09 is still in the planning stages, the exercise is currently designed to validate the following capabilities:
    Intelligence/Information Sharing and Dissemination
    Counter-Terrorism Investigation and Law Enforcement
    Air, Border and Maritime Security
    Critical Infrastructure Protection
Public and Private Sector Alert/Notification and Security Advisories
    International Coordination
    VALIDATING THE HOMELAND SECURITY SYSTEM

      Conspiracy theory time:

Isn’t it odd that these guys were arrested while the exercise above was being put in motion, and they were doing some staging for the event in NC? Not saying these guys are innocent, but why didn’t they grab them before this exercise started? And, did this operation use foreign entities to do the arrests?

Remember, DHS carried this out, and we all know that they are “just looking out” for our “safety”.

  • http://HBCIndy.com Dr. Jerry

I wish DHS would have called me! I have a nice team of “guys” who could have taken care of these Jihadists and saved the tax payers lots of money and at the same time sent a rather stern and obvious message to all other like minded individuals. “Try to kill us and we are going to kill you, one by one, with smiles on our faces.”

Oh…well…to bad…it would have been fun.

  • Tim Roesch

DHS couldn’t find the African American jihadi who shot at the soldiers in Arkansas but they found the white ones in NC.
    Coincidence?

Also, the accusations seem vague. What specifically did they do?
    Are these patsies (sp)?

I would like to see more specifics before I start finding ‘boy friends’ in jail for them.

The paintball mention hits close to home. Is anything terrorism? Is this a test case for weak law aimed at ‘everyone’ who doesn’t agree with the system? Is your travel itinerary good enough cause for an arrest?

  • toldyouso

Sounds like possible neo-nazi that were working with Islamics

    • Tim Roesch

Can we get any confirmation of this?

I know, I know, sounds like another pseudo-intellectual, pot smoking, paranoid post from yours truely but I am firmly of the belief that we, meaning Americans are going to get ONE SHOT at this take back America thing.

We need to do it right and not fall into the ambush I am CERTAIN is being prepared for US.

    • toldyouso

      I was just guessing.
