That is saying they are so innocent and so uncommunist now, so unarmed, so one with the world community. We are unable to attack you and we are no threat. Yeah, right.

It may be old, but like an M1 Garand, it’s still viable! The old Russian Bear is only hibernating! :gun:

Kirk, I am afraid its not the Bear we should be worried about, its the Dragon that is the real enemy both economically and militarily.

The unreported fact here is that both the populations of the USA and USSR were chattels in the strategy of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) that dominated the era.
The US had very little in the way of Civil Defense (shelters, etc.) whereas the USSR made some significant efforts. However, neither side would have fared well as simply surviving the initial blast is only part of the issue. The resulting radiation levels would have been unlivable and lasted for generations.
Little credit is given the technological advances that improved warhead accuracy to the point where smaller yield (150 Kilotons or less) warheads precisely placed would deliver superior results to the megaton warheads of old. Therefore a single MIRV missile could target and destroy 8 to 10 missile silos in a preemptive strike without targeting population centers.
While this made (limited) nuclear war at once more defensible as a strategy it also frightened both sides into contemplating that nuclear was now more likely. This is (was) the motivating factor towards disarmament.

Look at the AFIT with the big brain! Yes, concur. I remember being terrified of the MAD concept growing up, especially after hearing the rumor the industrial port where I lived was a target, along with the strategic oil reserves on Weeks Island….

yep and once i met a retired nuclear submarine crew member, and when he found out were i was from , he said ” Tbilisi? oh yea, we had couple of warheads aimed at you guys”
but yea, most of the soviet era bunkers in my city are now turned into underground farms for veggies and stuff, and one of the bunkers (actually it was a huge tunnel that doubled as a bunker, cause it had three thick gates for each consecutive entrance chambers with a 2-3 meter concrete walls separating those, and the main bunker was about 300X40 meters) now it is turned into a huge dance club. and the subway system is also about 100 meters + deep into the rock so it served as a fallout shelter as well
