Akron police say they aren’t ready to call it a hate crime.
But to Marty Marshall, his wife and two kids, it seems pretty clear.
It came after a family night of celebrating America and freedom with a fireworks show at Firestone Stadium. Marshall, his family and two friends were gathered outside a friend’s home in South Akron.
Out of nowhere, the six were attacked by dozens of teenage boys, who shouted ”This is our world” and ”This is a black world” as they confronted Marshall and his family.
The Marshalls, who are white, say the crowd of teens who attacked them and two friends June 27 on Girard Street numbered close to 50. The teens were all black.
”This was almost like being a terrorist act,” Marshall said. ”And we allow this to go on in our neighborhoods?”
They said it started when one teen, without any words or warning, blindsided and assaulted Marshall’s friend as he stood outside with the others.
When Marshall, 39, jumped in, he found himself being attacked by the growing group of teens.
His daughter, Rachel, 15, who weighs about 90 pounds, tried to come to his rescue. The teens pushed her to the ground.
His wife, Yvonne, pushed their son, Donald, 14, into bushes to keep him protected.
”My thing is,” Marshall said, ”I didn’t want this, but I was in fear for my wife, my kids and my friends. I felt I had to stay out there to protect them, because those guys were just jumping, swinging fists and everything.
”I’m lucky. They didn’t break my ribs or bruise my ribs. I thank God, they concentrated on my thick head because I do have one. They were trying to take my head off my spine, basically.”
After several minutes of punches and kicks, the attack ended and the group ran off. The Marshalls’ two adult male friends were not seriously hurt.
”I don’t think I thought at that moment when I tried to jump in,” Rachel Marshall said. ”But when I was laying on the ground, I was just scared.”
Marshall was the most seriously injured. He suffered a concussion and multiple bruises to his head and eye. He said he spent five nights in the critical care unit at Akron General Medical Center.
The construction worker said he now fears for his family’s safety, and the thousands of dollars in medical bills he faces without insurance.
”I knew I was going to get beat, but not as bad as I did,” Marshall said. ”But I did it to protect my family. I didn’t have a choice. There was no need for this. We should be all getting along. But to me, it seems to be racist.”
Akron police are investigating. Right now, the case is not being classified as a racial hate crime. There were no other reports of victims assaulted by the group that night.
The department’s gang unit is involved in the investigation, police said.
”We don’t know if it’s a known gang, or just a group of kids,” police Lt. Rick Edwards said.
The Marshalls say they fear retaliation at home or when they go outside. They are considering arming themselves, but they’re concerned about the possible problems that come with guns.
For now, they are hoping police can bring them suspects. They believe they can identify several of the attackers.
”This makes you think about your freedom,” Marshall said. ”In all reality, where is your freedom when you have this going on?”

If you want to prove a crime on the part of the entire family: ie they all line up a story for police reports which they’ve fabricated and rehearsed, you need to prove three things, one of which is motive. Why?

First, just because I smell a fish doesn’t mean I think the family is guilty of laying out the dead, sea creature.
Here is why I immediately smelled something fishy.

Fifty? Based on pictures of the neighborhood, how did fifty (black) teens all converge upon the Marshalls and no one, aparently saw this, called police about it…could be a failure of the media to report…
Fifty people stomp you and all you get are bruises and a concussion? Teenage girl goes to dad’s defense and is merely knocked to the ground? Again, this could be a failure of the media to accurately report, a failure of Mr. Marshall to make an accurate count as ?# ‘teens’ assaulted him in the dark.
2. Look at the neighborhood. Fifty teens are roaming around a nice appearing neighborhood like this and no one noticed? No one heard shouting and called the police?

The reporter didn’t confirm this? ‘He said he spend five nights…’
Again, fifty people stomp him and he gets a concussion and bruises?
4. No graffitti, no broken windows, no damaged cars, no litter, beer bottles…does the scene we are lead to believe where this occured appear as though fifty teens attacked someone? Fifty, well behaved teens in one place cause a mess by accident. What did the gang do, police their brass?

No profanity? No one else in the neighborhood heard teenage boys shouting? Hell, the lawn looked pretty good for fifty teens walking all over it.

It could be slipshod reporting, a family trying to make a mountain of a molehill to attract attention to some relatively minor altercation and ellicit sympathy OR this was an incredibly well rehearsed, contained and controlled ‘mob’ of teen aged boys who performed a hit and run worthy of some specialized unit of . . . what? To what end? They didn’t even get a great deal of publicity out of it!
Where’s the follow up for the Marshalls? Are friends and family angry that this happened? Fifty teens attack a family and one police officer calmly tells the camera they are looking into this?
If this was a ‘gang’, most hardcore gangs couldn’t put fifty soldiers on the street like that, again, without someone knowing…then to do what? They got prostitutes to John, drugs to sell, 40 oz’ers to drink.

3. Where does it say “There were no witnesses and no one called the police”?
4. Why have the police assigned the gang unit, and why are there no statements from them impugning the family’s credibility, if the story, as investigated on the ground, so lacks any credibility?

No attack of family. None. I have no information to do such a thing. What I do have are questions. My motive is two-fold:
1. I don’t want to see Americans baited into jumping at shadows and making themselves look like the bad guys. I have seen it on the playground a thousand times-perp one taunts or threatens, quietly, victim one. Victim one, harassed beyond tolerance, lashes out and becomes perp two while perp one acts all innocent and shit…
2. It smells like some sort of trap to me. If I were walking point here I would be extremely concerned for my patrol. I am working over time to find out what really happened. If the story is true then most of the posts here are VERY justified. Someone is inciting a race war. If there is something fishy here, then a race war might be started by accident.

First, there didn’t appear to be confirmation of the stay in intensive care and five days in intensive care is not ‘thousands’ of dollars.
Motive of the Marshalls? Assume that this is some sort of hoax: The Marshalls are looking to garner sympathy or support in the community for ________ (fill in the blank). Maybe this is an elaborate scam to get back at someone.
This presumes I think the Marshalls are part of the scam or are culpable in some manner.
The other side of this might have been an elaborate plan to frighten or anger ‘right wing terrorists’ into violent actions in retaliation for an event that can’t be proven to have happened (he said she said) by ‘attacking’ a ‘white family’ with ‘blacks’. The Marshalls might have been an easy target or one of convenience (though why Akron, OH? Are there militias nearby to incite into action that Holder can act on?).

You don’t know jack about Akron. That place is a completely polarized dump and one of the crappier suburbs of Cleveland (The mistake by the lake). There are all black neighborhoods and all white neighborhoods and the blacks routinely target the whites for violence. Not always, but sometimes God gives me dreams and brief visions as metaphors for a greater truth. I saw right after Hussein was elected a tree that was dead. The ground around it was desolate and the tree had grown up crookedly, leaning to one side. Kind of like that tree in Sleepy Hollow. Bloody, deformed, and misshapen fruit began popping up breaking the surface of the desolate earth around this tree. It had been growing beneath the surface for a long time but it had just now began to spring forth popping out.
What we are witnessing with incidents like this are the fruit of decades of welfare dependancy, victimhood mentality, marxist education, moral degeneracy. Particularly in the black community but in other areas as well. For example, why is gay marriage even being debated? 10 years ago the idea would have been absurd.
What in the world does gay marriage have to do with a gang of blacks beating the snot out of a White family?

I have been against the concept of hat crimes since the first discussion of them. The problem is attempting to define “hate” and the potential for misuse.
This is especially true of the concept of “hate speech’ which is a pretty nebulous term if there ever was one.
In this case I’d be happy if the police captured the leaders of the group of 50 (or however many there were) and charged them according to Ohio statutes with:
1. Assault and Battery (with intent to commit grievous bodily harm)
2. Inciting to riot
3. Disorderly conduct
4. Trespassing
5. Whatever else applies.
Oh yea .. Mr. Attorney General Holder … how about staring an investigation to see if the victims civil rights were violated to wit the right to peaceful assembly?

Let me go on record as saying that I oppose hate crime laws as much as anyone. They are unconstitutional, and that right there should be enough. But going further, these laws cause resentment among those not so protected, and that resentment is justified.
I believe that these laws were not put on the books with good intentions; I think they are designed to cause resentment and to drive yet another wedge into society, dividing us even more than we are already.

Okay, in the short time I have between LTV Olympics and my robotics class…here is what I found.
The Kaika Klan Outlaws seem to be in the news alot (for Akron,OH) and there was a large bust recently (1/14/2009)

Was the attack on the Marshalls from this gang or another gang trying to take over territory from a suddenly weakened gang? Did the Marshalls have anything to do with the arrests or were they suspected of it?
Why no deaths or serious injuries (sorry Pat, the guy just didn’t look like someone who was stomped by 50 kids)? Did the Marshalls simply stumble into something, interrupt a street fight or jumping in ceremony, what? Was this a warning to nosy citizens?
Again, 50 kids just show up and disappear? Did another gang show up? Possibly a very quiet but impressive Neighborhood Watch which didn’t want to attract law enforcement attention OR is Law Enforcement aware of this ‘vigilance committee’ and is okay with it (hence no police comments about it)?

Firestone Fireworks Assault - A Hate Crime?

Akron Police and Mayor Plusquellic have asked the FBI to look into the assault of a family watching fireworks at Firestone Park to see if it was racially motivated.
AkronNewsNow broke the story of four people assaulted while watching fireworks at Firestone Park by a group of 30-40 black teens. Now, authorities and city leaders are asking the FBI to look into the June 27 incident on Girard Street to see if the victims civil rights protections were violated and the incident be classified as a ‘hate crime.’ The request comes after multiple interviews with witnesses at the scene.
Martin Marshall, the man who spent the better part of a week in the hospital following the attack says he won’t comment on whether the crime was motivated by racial hate. ” I’m just an individual who feels that I have been very violated, assaulted and I am very upset with the whole ordeal” he says.
Marshall thinks it’s up to police and the FBI to label and investigate the incident.

Heard about (and been the recipient of) plenty of this kind of flash beatdowns. I doubt very many blacks not old enough to collect social security experienced as much racism as your average white kid in black neighborhoods does these days. Black kids in white neighborhoods, on the other hand, tend to get their asses kissed, not kicked.
One punk, knowing his ‘peeps’ are watching, sucker punches a honky, and as soon as it doesn’t go his way or someone starts to intervene, everyone else jumps in. More often than not, they’ll just each throw a few punches or kicks to prove they’re not cowards (as if assaulting someone who you’ve probably never even seen before ten on one doesn’t prove they’re fucking pussies) then run away like the little bitches they are. These attacks are far more about building up face than inflicting real damage, although a mob doesn’t have to try very hard to seriously fuck someone up. Course sometimes they don’t stop until the victim(s) is a red smear on the pavement. Even if they’re not actively trying to kill you, even a half-hearted kick to the head can kill.
Col. Dave Grossman makes a point in “On Killing” that withing a species, it’s not just fight or flight; there’s also posture and submit. Posture means trying to appear as ferocious as possible, but not actually trying to kill or maim the enemy. When you get down to it, most fights are like that. No one gets really hurt that often, when you think about it.
He also makes a point about the dark power of using atrocities to bind a unit together, a tool used by tyrants from the Assyrians to the Nazis. Gangs do the same thing; from wannabe Bloods having to slash some stranger’s face open to join, to, as Ji said, Mexican gangs having to kill a black to join. The collective guilt, and the fear of retribution, does wonders in uniting a group of individuals.
It also usually means peace will never be possible with their enemies, only victory or death. Look at how WWI ended compared to WWII. The first ended when Germany knew it was defeated and surrendered to spare its people more suffering. The second ended when its military was all but annihilated, its cities in ruins, and much of its population dead or at the (sometimes non-existent, especially with the Russians) mercy.
The jihadis, gangbangers, and communist would-be revolutionaries would do well to remember that. Knowing what they’d to to me or mine, I wouldn’t be inclined to take prisoners or leave survivors. People forget the corollary to the Golden Rule: Others will do unto you as you have done unto them. When you get right down to it, reciprocity is what makes the world go round.
I have no real desire to go into a stranger’s neighborhood, kill everything that moves, and burn it to the ground.
If people from that neighborhood had recently robbed, raped, and murdered my friends and family, though…

This would mean the issue would handled differently than a serious, coordinated, planned attack on easiest available white people.

I do know one thing, if my family, friends or myself are put in harms way I WILL make headline news. As Tic mentioned, posturing means a lot in averting a confrontation. My neighbor and I broke up a party with college age kids next door to me, they got way out of hand. I had a baseball bat and a bad attitude, they cooled their shit, we went home. And yes I had my SA XDM & 1911 close by.
