That was really dumb !! I learned about hang-fires as a kid. Keep weapon pointed downrange till you’re sure you’ve got a dud, otherwise things could get exciting!!!!!

Reminds me of the time I was on the firing line during Basic at Ft. Dix.
I fired my three rounds and waited for the Range Officer to tell us to safe our weapons when I heard this sound from my left:
“Hey, Sergeant! It won’t fire!”
I turned my head and found myself looking down the barrel of an M16 with some idiot squeezing the trigger to show the ‘sergeant’ that the weapon wouldn’t fire.
I discovered three toads at the bottom of the concrete lined foxhole. I thought I was dying when the bottom of the foxhole became darker.
It was my drill sergeant, blotting out the late morning, NJ sun, asking me if I was alright.
Nice guy.
