That is essentially, what is happening here.

The San Andreas Fault line runs from the southern tip of Baja to the tip of land by the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco. A slow unzipping process is taking place.

That entire land mass is moving North.

A Geologist instructor once told me the entire land mass will be an Island north of San Fransisco in 10 million years.

It will not sink. It is slowly moving north.
