ACTIVE is launching a very important ACTIVE Operation, a permanent fundraising effort for Michael Yon, whose stories from the frontlines have earned him the reputation as the premier independent combat journalist and photographer of his generation. His work has been featured on “Good Morning America,” CNN, ABC, FOX, and in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Weekly Standard, The New York Post, as well as hundreds of other major media outlets all around the world. Michael is scheduled to be a weekly guest on “The Jihadi Killer Hour”, bringing live updates from the front lines of the surge in Afghanistan. Last Sunday’s interview took place as a firefight blazed in the near distance.

His work has been submitted for three separate Pulitzer Prizes, in photography and reporting categories, and continues to garner awards and acclaim from both mainstream and alternative media organizations.

Michael values his independence and the credibility it brings him with the people who trust Michael with their stories and those who trust him to report the truth: good, bad & ugly.

But this work is both dangerous and incredibly expensive and without a steady level of income through the continued support and contributions of readers it will be impossible for him to continue his mission in Afghanistan and reporting on the victory in Iraq.

If support does not substantially increase Michael Yon will be forced to abandon war reporting in September.

There is NO OTHER truly honest, independent voice willing to share the stories of our brave men & women who serve with honor and dignity in Afghanistan and Iraq. Now, more than ever, while this administration is controlling the message and the media, it is VITAL that Michael continue his independent “boots on the ground” coverage in Afghanistan.

When you financially support Michael’s work and his mission, you also support the mission of our troops and their coalition partners.

I donated some money on his site last week. I had a little trouble with the paypal link there, but it finally went through.

Michael Yon, along with Pat, is one of a precious few reporters who have the gumption to go to where the REAL news on the war is happening, and to report the REAL truth from the front lines, not some made up liberal spin tripe from some safe hotel room like has happened in Iraq (see the Young Americans video where one Marine (Iggy?) describes a “journalist” doing exactly that).

It’s absolutely crucial that Yon is able to keep operating.

Afghanistan: Michael Yon Experiences the Mind-Numbing Rules of Engagement Our Soldiers are Held to First-Hand……

    …quoting Michael Yon….
“Why are we surrendering to Taliban propaganda? Nobody needs me to say, ‘this isn’t how you win a war’….

….Word comes a little later that the Taliban are saying we bombed people who were eating watermelon in a field.  The Afghans responded by telling us this was a lie, because they know how careful the British and Americans are with their fires, and they also knew that Afghans do not sit in fields around here this late at night eating watermelon.

I’ve witnessed too many missions (several in the last week) wherein British or Americans refused to fire because they could not positively spot a weapon, despite it being flagrantly obvious that we were tracking actual enemies.

It’s very frustrating for me at times because I want to say to an American or British commander…Take the shot!  This is too obvious!  But that is not the place of a writer. The strategic wisdom behind the Rules of Engagement can be difficult to contest, though tactically, those same ROE can be fantastically frustrating.  Tactically, the restrictive ROE endanger our troops every day, but strategically there is no doubt that strong ROE save the lives of even more.”
