PHOENIX — About a dozen people carrying guns, including one with a military-style rifle, milled among protesters outside the convention center where President Barack Obama was giving a speech Monday — the latest incident in which protesters have openly displayed firearms near the president.

Gun-rights advocates say they’re exercising their constitutional right to bear arms and protest, while those who argue for more gun control say it could be a disaster waiting to happen.

Phoenix police said the gun-toters at Monday’s event, including the man carrying an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle slung over his shoulder, didn’t need permits. No crimes were committed, and no one was arrested.

The man with the rifle declined to be identified but told The Arizona Republic that he was carrying the assault weapon because he could. “In Arizona, I still have some freedoms,” he said.

Phoenix police Detective J. Oliver, who monitored the man at the downtown protest, said police also wanted to make sure no one decided to harm him.

“Just by his presence and people seeing the rifle and people knowing the president was in town, it sparked a lot of emotions,” Oliver said. “We were keeping peace on both ends.”

Last week, during Obama’s health care town hall in New Hampshire, a man carrying a sign reading “It is time to water the tree of liberty” stood outside with a pistol strapped to his leg.

“It’s a political statement,” he told The Boston Globe. “If you don’t use your rights, then you lose your rights.”

Police asked the man to move away from school property, but he was not arrested.

Fred Solop, a Northern Arizona University political scientist, said the incidents in New Hampshire and Arizona could signal the beginning of a disturbing trend.

“When you start to bring guns to political rallies, it does layer on another level of concern and significance,” Solop said. “It actually becomes quite scary for many people. It creates a chilling effect in the ability of our society to carry on honest communication.”

He said he’s never heard of someone bringing an assault weapon near a presidential event. “The larger the gun, the more menacing the situation,” he said.

Phoenix was Obama’s last stop on a four-day tour of western states, including Montana and Colorado.

Authorities in Montana said they received no reports of anyone carrying firearms during Obama’s health care town hall near Bozeman on Friday. About 1,000 people both for and against Obama converged at a protest area near the Gallatin Field Airport hangar where the event took place.

One person accused of disorderly conduct was detained and released, according to the Gallatin Airport Authority.

Heather Benjamin of Denver’s Mesa County sheriff’s department, the lead agency during Obama’s visit there, said no one was arrested.

Arizona is an “open-carry” state, which means anyone legally allowed to have a firearm can carry it in public as long as it’s visible. Only someone carrying a concealed weapon is required to have a permit.

Paul Helmke, president of the Washington, D.C.-based Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said people should not be allowed to bring guns to events where Obama is.

“To me, this is craziness,” he said. “When you bring a loaded gun, particularly a loaded assault rifle, to any political event, but particularly to one where the president is appearing, you’re just making the situation dangerous for everyone.”

He said people who bring guns to presidential events are distracting the Secret Service and law enforcement from protecting the president. “The more guns we see at more events like this, there’s more potential for something tragic happening,” he said.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said armed demonstrators in open-carry states such as Arizona and New Hampshire have little impact on security plans for the president.

“In both cases, the subject was not entering our site or otherwise attempting to,” Donovan said. “They were in a designated public viewing area. The main thing to know is that they would not have been allowed inside with a weapon.”

Representatives of the National Rifle Association did not return calls for comment.

The time has come. United States citizens will not take the crap that DC hands out any longer.

9-12-09 in DC with 20 million armed US citizens.

I find it interesting that the only people with a problem are the Marxists/propagandist that are destroying our liberty and freedoms.

    • Garth

Exactly, Mike. The leftists are who don’t get that the Constitution of the US grants us rights, particularly the right to bear arms.

History has shown us that when a citizenry is disarmed, only bad things happen.

Not to nitpick Garth, but the Constitution does not grant us rights, our Rights are God given, the Constitution restricts the governing bodies ability to curtail these rights.

What do y’all think of this? I’m as pro-2nd Ammendment as anyone in this Country and will be buying my first fire-arm in 2 weeks. That being said, I’m torn on this as you know the MSM will be all over this to show “right wing extremism” at its finest.

Yes, I know, I know. Screw the MSM. I’m just feeling pretty good lately about how much momentum our side is carrying and worry that this will negatively effect many in the middle. Thoughts?

    • tlk

Maybe it will finally get them to shut the fuck up.

    • http://www.dirtydozensbunker.com Sanders

We are in the situation we are in because too many people tried to appease those in the middle.

There are two sides to a fence and no room in the middle for those who have not the courage of their convictions. They are in the middle because they are going to go with whichever side looks like it is going to win.

Considering that Barry was named “Gun Salesman of the Year for 2008″ for being the vector for record amounts of firearms and ammo sales (enough to equip both the Chinese AND Indian Armies) I don’t think the majority of the public minds it at all.

    • cold soldier

I see your point about labeling us “crazy” but I think people are beyond worrying about “labels” now. It seems the government is starting to fear the people now, which was the intentions of the founding fathers when the wrote the 2nd Ammendment.

    ALL
WTF……WE should be showing all the ARMED TO THE TEETH Niggas and ACORN shits like the Black Panthers in Jasper, TX trying to INTIMIDATE people; Niggas in Jena, LA with guns for convicted black beating of a white; Black Panther in Philly……

Gee, MSM also won’t mention that this is CONSERVATIVE BLACK who hates obama.

Also, if any (D)’s or (R-RINO)’s get killed, I will celebrate with a beer!!!!!

He didn’t sound like a nutcase at all in the interview I saw. He sounded like a logical and true conservative Patriot. I think he would have fit the Left’s stereotype of gun-totin’ Americans better if he was a plant.

      Lone wolf, thanks for info.

  • PatriotofPast

TY, I would not worry about the MSM. Just remember the Second Ammendment is for Liberals too, its is up to them to excersise that RIGHT. :gun:

“When you start to bring guns to political rallies, it does layer on another level of concern and significance,” Solop said. “It actually becomes quite scary for many people. It creates a chilling effect in the ability of our society to carry on honest communication.”

WRONG, the only people that should be feeling a CHILLNG EFFECT by people exercising their Constitutional rights are those members of the MOONBAT-LIBTARD death cult uptopian philosophies MARXISM SOCIALISM COMMUNISM that would strip rights of those in a free society.

While the Black guy with the AR may or not be a plant along with others, it warns those out their that if they try to legislate or outright strip us of our rights they are in for a fight on many levels. We are tired of the direction things have been going for years, the population is engaged, plus the BUSSED IN Obamessiah Fan Club was outnumbered big time there, even CNN acknowledged that on Dobbs’ show last night.

Saw this on Drudge, the Joker Poster Artist apparently:

What will happen is an SEIU thug will bring one and shoot into the crowd (most likely at the socialist crowd to frame the rebellion) just like they bring obama hitler signs to try to frame the rebels….it’s only a matter of time.

  • Storm 0311

    Paul Helmke is a poltroon.
    And a bed wetter alarmist.

Maybe what truely scared him was an armed conservative black man in public?

    Who is the rascist?

    • Ivan the Kafir

An armed conservative black man is a free man and the equal of any man alive. A liberal black man is still living on the plantation and is as much to be pitied as any man who partakes of the slave system.

I love how the media twists and distorts the facts especially when it comes to guns.

“The man with the rifle declined to be identified but told The Arizona Republic that he was carrying the assault weapon because he could.”

Assault Weapons are defined as having a selector switch enabling semi-auto and automatic fire.

AR-15 does not meet that defination and therefore is only a semi-automatic rifle and NOT an assault weapon.
Gee does the MSM have an agenda here?

  • Baroness W.

Whenever the POTUS appears in public, a buffer zone is created in which no threat is allowed, legal, consitutional or otherwise.
This leads me to conclude something stinks to high heaven here.
    Stinks?
    REEKS!!!

  • ODIN2008

At some point the government must fear the teeth of the people. The government needs to know that we the people no longer fear them. :gun:

    • Ivan the Kafir

The government has long since lost their sense of fear. They don’t know what fear is. They fear neither God nor man. They fear only the loss of their privileges and luxuries. They should fear lest they transform themselves into the aristocracy of late-18th century France.

This is the right we are fighting to get back in California! It is the right of the people to keep and BEAR Arms. That’s pretty clear….”the right of the people to keep and BEAR Arms, shall not be infringed”. This is why our ancestors were able to carry weapons anywhere and everywhere they went.

I don’t know what about the current Usurper in Chief would lend you to call him a world leader, because he is anything but. Leader’s lead, Community Organizers agitate, race bate, and apologize when they have no ground to make apologies from. I have yet to see Soterro take a leadership role in anything he has done in his 7 months in office. America is not made of presidents, monarchs, oligarchies, aristocracies. America is made of liberty, liberty from tyranny, we are freed from tyranny by the sacrifice of citizen soldiers, and whoever forgets this has sold themselves into servitude and is breaking the first commandment – You shall have no other God’s before me. God is not mocked.

    The guy prefers anonymity.

He supposedly belongs to a 2nd A group in AZ.

They called the day before to inform the PHX PD of their armed presence.

They were given a PHX PD liaison officer and were bird-dogged by the PD & the Sec Ser.

Here is the link where I found the info. Plenty informative images as well.

    The USA is mental.

  • Matt in GA

If you live in a state where you can do this, you definitely should. Unfortunately my state has an anti-constitutional public gathering clause regarding firearms.

Rights are like muscles, if you don’t use them they atrophy.

  • http://HBCIndy.com Dr. Jerry

    Delta Actual,

As a law enforcement officer I have had the opportunity to provide security for a vice president of the United States.

As a military officer I have had the opportunity to provide security for dignitaries from the US and all over the world, of varying ranks and statures.

There is absolutely no US law, federal or state, that says you can not carry a firearm in the vicinity of any world leader, including the president of the United States.

Often Secret Service agents clear out areas before the arrival of the president, generally asking anyone who is armed to leave or take them aside for questioning and release.

However, inside the facility where the president or any world leader, speaking or meeting on US soil, is always declared off limits to all firearms and the majority of edged weapons.

I have been in the vicinity of President’s Clinton and G W Bush armed. Never with any ill intent and at the ready to defend the office of president if need be.

This man, in the video, and eleven others at that same rally, were no threat to anyone except a criminal deviant, a terrorist, or any other threat to the president or themselves.

It is a right that we all should take advantage of, if possible, the right to publicly and open carry a legally possessed firearm, whenever and whereever we can exercise that right.

Like I said above: Pack ‘em if you’ve got ‘em!

    • Joe

I pretty much agree with this. If you have the permits (depending on your local laws concerning that) you should be permitted to carry your weapon. Now, you should not be surprised if some secret service people come over to question you but as long as you don’t freak out you can probably go on your way. And also like you said, once it involves going inside a building the 2nd amendment does not really matter. If the building does not want people carrying weapons then that is their prerogative. I know federal buildings absolutely do not allow admittance if you are carrying a firearm.

Either way, good on this guy for not making a huge scene. Stupid on everyone else for freaking out. Although, I think his reasoning for carrying it was a bit selfish and just to draw attention to himself and his cause. I doubt this guy walks around all day carrying his rifle.

  • http://HBCIndy.com Dr. Jerry

Oh…and by the way…I love the picture above, showing the guy with the hand gun on the opposite hip from the AR and the loaded AR magazine in his hip pocket. Packin heavy, I’d say!
