Obama Planning To Build New Guantanamo In Kansas Or Michigan – Military/Civilian Prison Complex Also For Right Wing Extremists

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Obama administration is looking at creating a courtroom-within-a-prison complex in the U.S. to house suspected terrorists, combining military and civilian detention facilities at a single maximum-security prison.

Several senior U.S. officials said the administration is eyeing a soon-to-be-shuttered state maximum security prison in Michigan and the 134-year-old military penitentiary at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., as possible locations for a heavily guarded site to hold the 229 suspected al-Qaida, Taliban and foreign fighters now jailed at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba.

The officials outlined the plans—the latest effort to comply with President Barack Obama’s order to close the prison camp by Jan. 22, 2010, and satisfy congressional and public fears about incarcerating terror suspects on American soil—on condition of anonymity because the options are under review.

White House spokesman Ben LaBolt said Friday that no decisions have been made about the proposal. But the White House considers the courtroom-prison complex as the best among a series of bad options, an administration official said.

For months, government lawyers and senior officials at the Pentagon, Justice Department and the White House have struggled with how to close the internationally reviled U.S. Navy prison at Guantanamo.

Congress has blocked $80 million intended to bring the detainees to the United States. Lawmakers want the administration to say how it plans to make the moves without putting Americans at risk.

The facility would operate as a hybrid prison system jointly operated by the Justice Department, the military and the Department of Homeland Security.

Scott Silliman, director of Duke University’s Center on Law, Ethics and National Security, called the proposal “totally unprecedented” and said he doubts the plan would work without Congress’ involvement.

0bama has put himself in a position that if another terrorist attack happens in America, he can (and will) be rightfully blamed. And if a freed Gitmo Alum is implicated, he will be impeached.

Petition for recall, every elected official. Washington DC is in a state of anarchy.

This twisted state of affairs is not anarchy. Rather, it is the opposite of anarchy: tyranny. Were anarchy the governing factor, there would be no government. People would settle their affairs with one another and factions of the population would be fighting one another for influence (which they are).

But a government DOES exist. It is a tyranny because it is largely unaccountable to the people. This is largely the result of rigged primaries and gerrymandered Congressional districts (not to mention graveyard voting). So far, this tyranny is only a “soft” tyranny. When the government starts suppressing dissent like Iran, we will be encountering “hard” tyranny.

Re-open Club Gitmo. Can we put a casino down there? Maybe someone should contact a cruise line about this.

I give the nod to Ft. Leavenworth.

There is a lot of new construction going on up there and for sometime the scuttle butt has been that Ft. Leavenworth will probably get some or all of the GITMO detainees.

“And if a freed Gitmo Alum is implicated, he will be impeached.”

    Not with the current congress.

Paslode.. I know the guy they just hired to run operations at the new facility… He worked Gitmo for a while… But I am 95% sure the new facility is not designed to house GItmo type detainees… There was a big assessment done around 2005 and several medium and min. security facilities are being closed around the country and the plan was to move those guys to Leavenworth….

They are getting a whole gaggle of MPs up there.. Much of the new construction you see is housing for these guys…

It would be interesting though if they surprised the chit out of EVERYONE at Leavenworth and moved GITMO detainees there… LMFAO.. That means the plan to do would have been GWB’s plan… conceived around 2005.

Time will tell what will be housed there. Someone I know should be heading up there soon for a construction phase and I am sure he will pick up some news as to what is going on.

What’s to stop them from rounding up conservatives, constitutionalists, maybe a few libertarians and locking them up? Seems to me another Democrat president at another time had people locked up and they committed no crime at all.

  • bman

Why not Kansas. It went 88% for Bush and McCain even carried it. We have 3 of 4 conservative reps and two conservative Sen. Otherwise no influence. So what if the prisons are in an urban area impossible to secure.

Stupid you moron, stupid and dangerous, Terrorists and foreign fighters DO NOT BELONG IN A STATESIDE PRISON where their comrades can threaten, intimidate, kidnap civilian prison staff and their families or commit retaliatory acts against them.

This is a war you idiot, why invite the enemy to fight it on our soil?
