I know a chopper pilot who has landed his bird in a fast food parking lot. The sign in the parking lot said it is to be used for patrons of the restaurant. He went in and bought a coke.
Some cities have local ordinances preventing this kind of landing, but many do not. In many locations in the US it’s open season on landing where you want in a helicopter.
Sounds like a cool thing, landing at the school on the first day of classes, for the kid and his dad.
Remember: It is sometimes easier to ask forgiveness than permission.
The school would never have allowed it had he asked in advance. If they had, the insurance needed and legal documents to sign would have been onerous.
The nanny state needs to chill on this one. It was a one time thing and fun for all.
Well, almost all, the moron parents who worry about ‘blunt scissors in school’ look like they got pretty exercised. Maybe they could whip it up into a class action suit and make a bundle!
I’d say it’s no more dangerous than sending your kid to high school full of drugs, gangs, guns, knives, and liberal indoctrination. In fact, might be safer.
BAH! There’s nothing wrong with landing a helicopter anywhere, as long as you abide by regulations.
As long as you maintain proper obstacle clearance, then there is no problem. A football field is plenty of space for a little Robinson R22. Your typical SUV takes up more space than that type of helicopter.
I say bravo, his kid will be very popular this year.
The 101st landed a CH 47 at the local high school a couple of years ago as a static display. The only comment I read were kids were pissed they could go for a ride.
Big deal.

This should be considered inspirational:
Kid: “Hey that was cool! How could I become a helicopter pilot?”
Teacher: “Simple: Study math and science. Get good grades. Get a good job. Then pay for lessons. Or join the military and have them pay for lessons.”
The wind! The blades! The horror! Anything could have happened!
The kids thought it was cool. Kids know that too many adults have become fearful wussies.
Fear the helicopter! It’s sooo dangerous!

Raptor is right. He broke no laws and followed the regs. Freaking pussies want to bitch about everything.
The FAA has no case, but then their motto is “We’re the FAA and we’re not happy until you’re not happy”
Next year, SPIE rope his son and a couple buddies right on to the front lawn of the school.
OOH. But we’ll use my helicopter. You wanna worry about wind and flying debris.
The Fun Police strike again.
