School Superintendent Asked To Resign After Refusing To Air Obama Speech

VALDOSTA — The Rev. Floyd Rose called for Valdosta City School Superintendent Dr. Bill Cason’s resignation Monday night.

During the regular Board of Education meeting Rose, president of the Valdosta/Lowndes County Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, spoke to the board about the superintendent’s decision not to air President Barack Obama’s speech on education during school hours.

Rose and hundreds of others converged on the BOE office demanding answers for why the speech was not shown in a school system that is predominately black.

On the day the speech was scheduled to air, Rose and others met with Cason and discussed why the speech would not be shown. Cason, Rose said, had plenty of time between the meeting and the speech to call the schools and tell them to allow the children to watch the speech.

Rose said Cason’s reasons for not showing the speech were that it did not align with the Georgia Performance Standards that are the basis for school lesson plans and that the speech and the lesson plans provided would cut into instructional time.

“Let us be clear,” Rose said. “We read the President’s speech, and at no time did he propose lesson plans before, during, or after his speech, as claimed by Dr. Cason. He never mentioned lesson plans. Never.”

Rose went on to say that any offer to show the speech later is not acceptable, he said.

“Here is what I know, here is what you know, here is what the hundreds of people here and out in the street know,” Rose said. “If Dr. Cason were black and 80 percent of the school children in his district were white, and he arbitrarily decided not to allow white children to watch a white president’s ‘back to school’ speech,’ and whites came here tonight in the numbers that blacks have come to protest, he would resign, or be fired. And we are here to demand no less.”

Rose got a standing ovation after his address to the board.

Cason then responded to what he called “allegations and accusations.”

He said that he received notification of the speech only several days before it was scheduled to be shown.

Cason went on to say that lesson plans were included to be used before, during and after the speech.

During his comments a person from the audience shouted “He lies!”

As the lesson plans were presented they did not align with GPS, Cason said.

Checking around with other school systems in the area he found that many chose not to air the speech at its scheduled time and if they did they had provisions where students could opt out of watching the speech.

    let’s think about this people…do you not think that by them going for ‘our throat’ is what they want to do and they also are trying to provoke us into a confrontation and when that happens the big Zero will use his NSDP51, martial law powers and then we will all be phucked cause we will not be able to communicate. typical divide and conquer sh*t! which is why we ALL need an alternate means of communication.       I understand where you’re coming from, aTb, but sooner or later there comes a breaking point … and, Obamunik has any number of excuses to put the U.S. under martial law. Don’t misunderstand … I’m not disagreeing with you. I’m damned angry right now, but I haven’t ‘lost it’. There are just very few forums where I can vent. Right now, these scumbags in Washington are ‘feeling their oats’ after officially, and publicly, rebuking a Republican … which is really what this was about – an effort to destroy the Republican Party and conservatives. They will not let up. Maxine Waters now wants good American citizens such as those that protested in Washington and across the country to be confronted and you know they would like all those people investigated and jailed. The cry of Racism doesn’t resonate with most people any more, but there is a reason that charge is being used. It will be an excuse to utilize existing hate-crime laws. This has been set up for a long time in my estimation while most are viewing it as them simply flailing about miserably … not! They know exactly what they’re doing. I do respect your sage advice.

    The Valdosta City Schools System provided the following statistics where Superintendent Bill Cason denied children to watch the President of the United States Back to School Speech. This information is being published to inform the general public on the realities of Valdosta School System.

    These statistics are similar to the separate but unequal schools of the 1960s. Superintendent Cason decision magnetically drew 473 concerned citizens to the September Valdosta Board of Education Meeting asking that he resign. However my desire is for board members to resign who have forgotten who elected them into office.

    To understand where Valdosta is along race relations, you only need to visit on line comments posted by local citizen here in Valdosta-Lowndes County Georgia on the superintendent’s resignation. Although we are a said to be Metropolitan Metropolis the comments are similar to those dating back to the 1950s.

    Just five (2004) years ago this Valdosta 1860 Charter was displayed on the second floor of Valdosta City Hall leading into the Municipal Court Room of Judge Edwards that read: Article 100, Section XI, “THAT THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL SHALL PASS ALL PROPER AND NECESSARY LAWS AND ORDINANCES FOR THE CONTROL OF SLAVES AND FREE PERSONS OF COLOR IN SAID TOWN AND SUPPRESS AND ABATE ALL NUISANCES ARRIVING FROM HOGS, DOGS, HORSES, OR OTHER STOCK STRAYING AT LARGE IN SAID TOWN, OR FROM OTHER CAUSES.”

    Therefore Superintendent Cason decision is in alignment with this outdated charter. His decision most certainly CONTROLLED, SUPPRESSED, and ABATED Valdosta School Children if not the President of the United States. And this just may be the peek of the pyramid of Valdosta and Lowndes County racial divide.

    Blacks are 52 percent of our city, and 80% of Valdosta City School System. However Black principals, teachers, and administrators are practically all White based upon a 80% Black population.

    In fact the Board of Education Office Administrators is referred to as the “Little White House because so few Blacks are employed.” Many people of color and White Right people see the school system as a disgrace when it comes to fairness, expulsions, integration, respecting all children equally, and hiring of Black Educators in the school system.

    The same disparity is applicable throughout all areas of the city as relating to Black Department Heads, Bank Managers, number of contracts handled by Black African Americans for whatever reason, and this disparity runs down through practically ever aspect of local city, County, state, and federal government job employments.

    Superintendent Cason actions brought out 473, citizens at the Board Meeting, 315 citizens came out today at St. Paul A.M.E. Church along with other community and Civil Rights Leaders from outside the Valdosta area, and a meeting is scheduled for tomorrow night at 7:pm at the Church at Pine Hill on Clay Road for more input from community leaders and consideration of ideas from the general public.

    We must understand that during the Civil and Human Rights Movement in the 60s, it seemed strange and mysterious how our God used Governor Lester Maddox, George Wallace, Sheriff Eugene Bull Connor, and others who underestimated our God, the God of ABRAHAM, ISAAC, and JACOB but in the end right won.

    Therefore no one should think that this is all about Rev. Floyd E. Rose, or anyone else for that matter. We all are confident as in the days of OLD, that our God will act once again in his own MYSTERIOUS way and time—-to create a community wherein all Gods Children will be respected, hired, educated, and treated with dignity and respect. (Galatians 6:7). Therefore, only when citizens want for their neighbor, that which they want and have for themselves,and their own family. Then, and only then can the problems in our community be resolved here in Valdosta-Lowndes County Georgia and all the people of good will say AMEN!

    Lastly: Superintendent Cason will go down in history against our Executive Commander-In-Chief of our beloved nation, and against our children in Valdosta School System. Moreover the historical archives will reflect that Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and their neighbors children that were serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and in other war torn areas around the world were disrespected along with their children stationed at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia. Yet these soldiers placed themselves in harm way but their chidlren were NOT permitted to WATCH the man who sent their love ones in harms way on live television. How sad, in 2009. God bless all children of the world.

    The Valdosta Daily Times published an excellent article covering the Valdosta City School of Board Meeting on October 12, 2009, and included the following quote from my address: “George Rhynes said that before the meeting Cason agreed to have the meeting aired live on a local radio station and asked the audience to thank him. The applause was brief.”

    This was not the case. There was a long applause from the audience, and it was exceptionally respectful as the entire event. However, below is my actual prepared address for all to see and review. G.B.R.

    My Address Before: I am George Boston Rhynes, a Retired Military Veteran of twenty-years. I too am asking for the resignation of Superintendent Bill Cason and this is a serious matter. To the Valdosta City School Board, and NOT to Superintendent Cason. There have been forty-three (43) White Male Presidents that preceded President Barack Obama. There have been eight (8) Valdosta City School Superintendents and to my knowledge NOT one of them denied the other forty-three (43) White Male Presidents to address the students in our school system. No, not one of them.

    Moreover it is strange that several local radio stations use the word racists and refers to our president as a clown. Even more sickening is that our Superintendent Bill Cason, Mayor John Fretti, and other elected officials see nothing wrong with making this their favorite place to address citizens on talk radio. This offends me as a retired military veteran, and I was almost killed in an airplane in Guam. This hurts!

    President Obama is the Executive Commander-In-Chief of our armed forces, and many of these members are now facing death on a daily basis in Iraq, Afghanistan and on other foreign battlefields the world over. Some have died for this country. But their children here in the Valdosta City School System could not hear the president that sent their parents into harms way. How Sad?

    This is the home of Moody Air Force Base and these same parents place their life on the line. These are their children—-attending our school system. Hello somebody! But they were denied the right to listen to their president and you cannot tell me. That this does not hurt those children who are old enough to understand the danger that their mothers and fathers have been placed in by our Executive Commander-In-Chief. I mean this is unbelievable in 2009. It is totally unbelievable.

    IN CLOSING: The reasons given in the Times by the superintendent for not allowing the president speech to be GIVEN mystified me. That the speech interfered with or did not comply with Georgia Performance Standards or something along those lines. But like a previous speaker said, teachers are afraid to speak out about the concerns of our children. So they get behind a desk and say. “Brother Rhynes, Rev. Rose, Mark Georgia here is what goes on in our school. We don’t know. We are not in the school system. Even White teachers come and tell me, and I am a Black man, as black as they come.

    The teachers informed me that last year. They “sat for two hours watching a play put together by Valdosta State University Drama Department. They did fundraiser drives, band concerts, boy scouts recruitment, book fair, pep rallies, student duck walk, school pictures, steep testing and it goes on and on….” So how could the president speech waste time, but not this other junk they complained?

    Now in conclusion, please listen, please listen. Not even during America’s brutal days of the Black experience of slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, the lynching crusades, denying Black African American Citizens the right to vote, use a restroom on the highways, eat in a restaurant, called 3/5 of a human being and worse.

    Yet! {I then pointed to an extremely large 2009 Presidential Calendar (“39 X 27) with all (44) American President Pictures displayed with Barack Obama in the Center}. History records that Black African Americans NEVER disrespected the other forty-three White Male Presidents as is NOW being done to our 44th President of the United States. Then there was an extremely loud applause from the audience.

    No! Blacks never criticized these other 43 White Male Presidents! We never did it. Yet our ancestors were brought to these shores as slaves, considered beasts of the field—but we respected the Office of The President of the United States of America. {Loud applause}.

    So, how do you think, we feel Mr. Superintendent. How do you think, we feel when you denied these children, attending our inter city school system? “The Superintendent should have been gone!“
