US Fast Tracks New Super Bunker Busters

Congress has quietly approved to fast track the deployment of the BGU-57A/B or Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP). The Pentagon plans to rush the deployment of 10 BGU-57A/B “bunker buster” bombs by June 2010. The MOP is so enormous that it can only be delivered by a B-52 or a B-2A. In fact, the B-2 bombers will need to be refitted in order to carry two MOPs.

The MOP weighs in at a whopping 30,000 pounds, it’s warhead weighs in at 5,300 pounds and it can penetrate 200 ft (61 m) of 5,000 psi (34 MPa) reinforced concrete, 26 ft (8 m) of 10,000 psi (69 MPa) reinforced concrete, or 130 ft (40 m) of moderately hard rock.

    At one time the Lancer had the largest payload of the 3 bombers, or as usual this piece has been written by an uniformed libtard.

      I had the same question about the B-1 Lancer. If the B-52 can carry the BGU-57A/B bomb and if the B-2 can without refitting carry at least one BGU-57A/B bomb, then the B-1 can carry the BGU-57A/B bomb.

      The B-1B Lancer has 3 bomb bays, IIRC and they are each not as long as the two bays in the B-52. As usual, the physical length, not the weight, may be the issue for B-1.

      That the B-2 has to be modified to carry BGU-57 may not be completely accurate- they are still adding other weapons for the B-2. It still has not been tested with a large variety of ordnance that the B-52 has carried for years. But this is just SOP for the new bomber.

      I hear you, sir. But, we’re talking Iran and O here. And, people like ‘Chuck U’ Schumer who still vows to fight to enslave US. Right now I’d like O to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan if he’s not interested in any victory but his and not be trying to start a war with Pakistan and Israel. Otherwise, you are correct … deterrence is a sound policy if you aren’t abandoning defense spending everywhere else including back-stabbing our European allies. We do have some … or at least we did before O essentially threw them to the wolves.

      Exactly! In reference to the dialogue just above what really seems to be going on is this: O shouts any supposed intentions loudly but can only carry a limp dick. If this his way to scare Iran by bluffing them we are in for hell.

    We had an MOP on the ships I served on during the Reagan years. The full name does not sound right, though. I think our MOP was “Magnetic Orange Pipe.”
