President Obama insisted Tuesday that his review of the war in Afghanistan was in line with the strategy he unveiled last spring … “We are going through a very deliberate process that is completely consistent with what I said back in March,” Obama told reporters after a meeting with Spanish Preisdent Zapatero. “At the time, I said we were gonna deploy additional troops in order to secure the election. After the election, I said it was important for us to reassess the situation on the ground.”
Speaking to the press along with the Spanish head of government, the president emphasized the importance of security collaboration between the U.S. and Spain.
“Our countries have a relationship that dates back centuries,” Obama said. “Spain and the United States are working together on some of the most difficult security issues in the world.”
“Our engagement in Afghanistan is firm, is solid,” Zapatero added. “We will continue working together, in our cooperation, in Afghanistan.”
