Sky News:

Police say 968 people have been arrested during a climate change protest in the Danish capital Copenhagen.

Hundreds of youths dressed in black threw bricks and smashed windows as at least 30,000 people demonstrated in the centre of the city as world leaders debate global warming.

The rioters, whose faces were covered, went on the rampage in the heart of the city, prompting swift arrests as some 50 policemen in riot gear intervened.

Demonstrators were forced to the ground and then bundled into vans.

Police said those arrested were members of militant groups from northern Europe known as Black Blocs, who were accused of provoking street violence during a Nato summit in the French city of Strasbourg last April.

The rest of the march – the centrepiece of protests planned in 130 cities across the world – remained peaceful, ahead of a candlelit vigil.

Organisers said around 100,000 people took part. Police put the number at nearer 30,000.

Earlier, two Britons were deported for vandalism and spitting on a police officer during the protests.

Sky News correspondent Holly Williams said: “I was in the centre of Copenhagen today watching the demonstration and for the most part, like virtually every other protest we’ve seen here during the climate summit, it was largely peaceful.”

This weekend marks the halfway point of the crunch UN talks.

The conference aims to finish on Friday with a political deal sealed by more than 110 heads of state and government.

But many delegates have complained that progress so far had been negligible and the mood soured by finger-pointing.

I find it a bit unnerving to find myself and the anarchists on the same side of any issue.

Even though I find all of them and their methods despicable, at least they got this one correct.

BTW – Their methods triggered the start of World War 1.

Mabey I’m an anarchist now…I think people would do better with NO government compared to the one we have.

Hawker, I respect your opinion and I have my days where I feel that way too but I cannot forget that the Founding Fathers pointed out that both anarchy and tyranny were equally bad. If you want to know what anarchy looks like at its worst, check out China from 1920-1950.
