Leaked e-mails allegedly undermining climate change science should be treated as a criminal matter, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) said Wednesday afternoon.

Boxer, the top Democrat on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, said that the recently released e-mails, showing scientists allegedly overstating the case for climate change, should be treated as a crime.

“You call it ‘Climategate’; I call it ‘E-mail-theft-gate,’” she said during a committee meeting. “Whatever it is, the main issue is, Are we facing global warming or are we not? I’m looking at these e-mails, that, even though they were stolen, are now out in the public.”

The e-mails, from scientists at the University of East Anglia, were obtained through hacking. The messages showed the director of the university’s Climate Research Unit discussing ways to strengthen the unit’s case for global warming. Climate change skeptics have seized on the e-mails, arguing that they demonstrate manipulation in environmental science.

Boxer said her committee may hold hearings into the matter as its top Republican, Sen. James Inhofe (Okla.), has asked for, but that a criminal probe would be part of any such hearings.

“We may well have a hearing on this, we may not. We may have a briefing for senators, we may not,” Boxer said. “Part of our looking at this will be looking at a criminal activity which could have well been coordinated.

“This is a crime,” Boxer said.

    Pat,

    I’ve followed this story (Climateate) fairly closely. I’ve read nearly a hundred stories and I’m convinced the e-mails and damning programming documentation were not hacked – they were inadvertently put on a public server, by someone at CRU, in preparation for a possible response to a FOIA (or British equivalent) request. Once noticed, the info was downloaded and the rest is history.

    I’m just looking forward to the reveal that this was an insider document drop, and not a hack. There’s been no evidence to prove that any network intrusion took place, and the data that was released is far too specific to be a hasty grab by someone who didn’t know exactly what they were looking for.

    Whoever this person is, they at minimum had knowledge of the CRU’s network and where important data was stored. I’m gonna laugh really hard if the whistleblower reveals him or herself at Copenhagen.

    Global warming is the biggest scam ever perpetuated on the western nations, particularily the U.S. and the scumbag dems are leading the charge. They all need to be removed at the earliest opportunity. In an ideal world each and everyone of them would be tried for treason.

    Carly Fiorina will be the GOP candidate opposing Boxer in 2010.

    Ms. Fiorina was an excellent C.E.O. for Hewlett Packard and is currently beating a recent bought of breast cancer. A tough, intelligent, savvy, classy woman

    She is an excellent representative of the conservatives and deserves our support. Boxer needs to be erradicated ASAP.
