a parallel with the same situation that the Russians experienced in the eighties, Gorbachev was asking the same questions as one is supposed to in DC today
u seem to talk as if u just finished discussing the issues of world with dalai lama and he told you what to do.. share your vision. one thing that lacks a paralel with the soviet experience, is:
1) soviets were mass murdering fuckheads, and made a lot intentional leveling of the afghani villages in an irrational revenge actions, burning the villagers with napalm and 220mm MLRS. that didnt help in winnign hearts and minds of locals at all.
2) the whole western world supplied afghani mujahedeen with weaponry and finaces, especially with the Stingers…i wonder, how many helos got shot down with MANPADs in a’stan, do you know? i believe most were from mechanical issues and small/medium caliber fire. but still, its not like what afghanis did to the red army. - 500 jets and helicopters and hudreds of tanks…and 30,000 personel - and the last three years of the war (that means in 2006 in this timeline of involvement) soviets were already planning for withdrawal of troops. and the surge was mainly to secure the vital route from Kandahar all the way to the Tadjikistan border in order to cover the withdrawal.
3) curuption within the red army - mid-low ranking officer core was selling the soviet weaponry to the afghanis to fatten their pockets. once they even lured the helicopter crew into an ambush, cause some colonel decided to sell afghanis a Mi-8 helicopter, having the crew beheaded later.
4) lack of faith in the communist system within the armed units. total curruption from head to toe demorolised the average conscript.
5) hasing in the red army - also having a demoralising effect on personel, with a lot of “friendly fire” incidents and frags of the bullies.
6) a conscrit army - most of the 18 year old boys called in to the red army to serve in a’stan went there against their wishes. today america has 2 wars, and if somebedy is going to volunteer to serve in the armed forces, i believe they know why they are doing it, and expect to get into the hotspot and shoot a motherfucker. i mean, why would u join if u dont wanna fight.
These are just small examples of why did the soviets lost the war.
and its kinda disingenius to use nic like LechWalesa - he fought against the tyrany. what do you stand for?
“he fought against the tyrany”
so do I in a minnor way, rather like a french patriot, but elsewhere
Now I am not saying that I am an expert of this war, besides I didn’t see any comment on this topic that we could label of expert’s too. Though through my different readings on diverse places, I got the feeling that our Afghanistan war will not end better than the Russians’ one.
Its often easy to link wars of the past to current ones. It was dont not to long ago with the Iraq war being compared to Vietnam. Key differences are what set the two conflicts here apart. We didn’t invade a’stan because of some policy issue, or because we were promoting democracy. We did it becuase we were attacked. thats difference number one of a whole bunch. Another is that when Ruussia went. It went alone. Well I can tell you thats not the case in the current war. No International funding for the Taliban basically means for the most part they are stuck with RPGs and AKs. lastly unlike the last war where much of the common people were against the soviets the US has built alliances with many militia leaders. The norhtern alliance and similar groups, that were members of the Soviet opposition and even opposed the Taliban, have been aiding us since the start of the war.
ONE THING I HAVE LEARNED IN THE LAST FEW YEARS IS THAT ALL POLITICIANS LIE. ALL OF THEM ARE GARBAGE TO ME. BUT I WILL STILL GO KILL TERRORISTS SO MY FAMILY STAYS SAFE.
but Afghanistan is doomed

Now if we can just get him to admit the world is round…. and to stop beating on things with rocks while trying to “fix” them

Terrorists are not the only threat to your family.
