CBS:

Philadelphia — A pizza deliveryman was shot and killed during a robbery in the Belmont section of Philadelphia.

Authorities say the victim, who works for Accu Pizza, was shot while making a delivery at 41st and Aspen Streets at about 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Police arrived to find 36-year-old Kouakou Jacques of Upper Darby lying in the street with a gunshot wound to the neck. Jacques was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he died.

Investigators said Jacques responded to a call for pizza, but found the address was a vacant lot where the suspect(s) were hiding out.

“It’s very, very unfortunate that you have a hard-working individual that’s just trying to make ends meet for his family, who’s delivering pizza, and gets robbed and ultimately loses his life,” Captain James Clark explained.

Clark said the set-up call came from a pay phone near the scene of the deadly robbery.

Investigators said an undisclosed amount of money was stolen form Jacques.

This is the second time in the last two weeks that a pizza deliveryman has been robbed and killed. On January 10, Jaime Orozco-Torres, 60, suffered a fatal heart attack after being carjacked and robbed while making a delivery in West Oak Lane. Four teens were arrested in that incident.

Police say they have no suspects in the latest deadly robbery and ask anyone with information to contact authorities.

On a related note, my little brother was delivering pizzas while in college at Northwestern, LA. There was one area that nobody wanted to deliver to due to the high crime rate.
One afternoon, he was sent to that area. It was still daylight and many people were hanging out on their porches, in their yards, etc…
Three black males approached him and demanded his money. He refused and they knocked him to the ground and began to pummel him. At one point, one of the guys yells, “where’s your fuckin’ money.” My brother – not wanting to go down without a fight – yells, “in my back pocket you stupid N******!”

In retrospect, probably not too smart of a thing but I thought it was cool that he fought back. By the way, he ended up in the hospital that night. He said that, what really pissed him off, was the multitude of people that just watched without helping or calling 911.

Pennsylvania is a “shall issue” state, so there’s no reason to not practice due diligence and make sure you can respond effectively to threats like this. I feel sorry for the guy and his family. A nearby honest and armed citizen could have made it turn out much differently – with the bad guys in the ground instead of him.

Philly is the armpit of our state for a number of reasons: crime, lawyers, and dirty politicians just being the top three. I think that we should cede Philly to northern NJ and split southern NJ off to become its own state.

I lost ANY interest in ever going to Philadelphia just from watching a couple of episodes of “Parking Wars”….lol

What a sad waste of human life. Needless senseless death. Just a good guy trying to make a living. All these pizza franchises needs to do the right thing even though they’ll be racist and profile neighborhoods.

If it’s high crime, they don’t deliver, period.

Hey that could be a new slogan

Dominoes pizza – we keep our employees safe – high crime area, no delivery.
