Two members of the Austrian special forces join Nato’s Operation Cold Response, one of Europe’s biggest military exercises, in Narvik, Norway.

Dropping from 10,000ft, they glide in order to land unnoticed. The dogs often carry cameras and are trained to attack anyone carrying a weapon.

“Dogs don’t perceive height difference, so that doesn’t worry them. They’re more likely to be bothered by the roar of the engines, but once we’re on the way down, that doesn’t matter and they just enjoy the view,” said the dog handler. “It’s something he does a lot. He has a much cooler head than most recruits.”

Commandos from 14 countries, including British special forces and Royal Marines, took part in the Nato exercise. The use of dogs in High Altitude High Opening missions was pioneered by America’s Delta Force, which trained the animals to breathe through oxygen masks during the jump.

The SAS has adapted similar techniques and, according to special forces sources, bought a number of American-trained dogs for use in Iraq and Afghanistan. The dogs used by the British are fitted with a head camera, allowing special forces to see inside insurgent compounds, and Kevlar body armour.

As well as reconnaissance, the animals are trained to attack anyone carrying a weapon, although it is claimed that they will not attack those who are unarmed.

Two SAS dogs are reported to have died on raids in Iraq. Thor and Scotty were killed in 2008 when British special forces waged a successful campaign to destroy al-Qaeda’s bombing networks in Baghdad. Both animals are remembered on a stone memorial at the SAS headquarters in Hereford.

If I was a Haji, and I saw a growling, gliding dog flying out of the sky…man, they don’t make poppies strong enough for that.

    • T-bone

Yeah the Hajj don’t like dogs very much. Laughing right now thinking of the Abu Ghraib pics.

    • ghostie alix

oh! osgo just made me LOL!
      good one!

  • LechWalesa

the dogs will be killed anyway by any armed person, I don’t support this action

    • CPLViper

So you are saying a death notication letter sent to the wife or mother of a special forces operator is better?

    • LechWalesa

no CPL, but I doubt that this dog would replace the efficiancy of an armed soldier.

We have still image of WW1 of dogs carrying bomb, or going on bomb field to make them explode

I rather prefer to see a dog with anti-drugs servicemen, or with the persons that work on earthquakes aeras

      Lech -

I suggest if you can watch a Military Channel show called War Dogs in the Pacific, it is about the use of dogs by the Marines in WWII.

The Japanese were terrified of the Dogs. Yes they do become targets. But their senses are so much sharper than humans that they saved the lives of countless Marines by alerting to an enemies presence well before the enemy could spring an ambush.

The K-9 team is a unique and very effective tool whether it be in SAR, Drug Enforcement, or Combat Operations.

    • rightangle

Awe c’mon, Lech. They are just validating that old “dog is my co-pilot” saying.

  • MinneSoCold

That is the coolest photo I’ve seen this week (tied with the Olsen Twins). Badass dogs! Wonder if they file their teeth razor sharp too!

What color is the doghouse at Hereford?

I sure hope his parachute is a little larger than the HALO rigs I used to jump with; they were just about right for me and my gear, but with a dog? I dunno, but cool photo of dog rigged to jump.

  • westcoastgirl

Very cool. These dogs are natural hunters and I think it is great to use their talents this way. Go to hell PETA lovers.

Also, is it just me, or is the ramp on that TrashHauler barely used? Mine was so nasty my boots would stick….

    • http://www.bootparkergriffith.com The Sentinel at the Gate

You’re right; that ramp is very clean, isn’t it?

Also gleaned from pic; jumper looks to be AF CCT member because of that “pussy” smoke jumper type collar on his jump suit.

They really do not like the sound of the engines. When we carried them in Iraq they were obviously bothered by the sounds. Engines and gearboxes make very high pitched whines. Most of the time the handlers had a cool foam that was put into the dogs ear. After that they really did seem to like the view.

That is one of the coolest pictures ever.

Cows don’t like to fly either. My unit did some rigging and dropping heffers in crates; one heffer started busting out of crate and the jump/loadmaster had to send it off the ramp without static line hooked up. Probably only cow in the world that free-falled, but that would never make Guiness book.

  • Lone Wolf

I’m sure the dogs like it much better than just sticking their head out the window.

    • http://www.bootparkergriffith.com The Sentinel at the Gate

      Bwaaaaahahahah, great one!

  • eddiep

We need to train giant pigs that can be dropped over hajj controled areas. That have massive explosive charges attached to them. They penetrate enemy defences and then via camera the “controler” detonates these robo suicide pigs. Win Win! The phsy op component would have them freaked out ! Wondering when the next exploding robo pig attack wave will come !

    • http://marbur4@aol.com marsha

Now this sounds like a great ideal.

Or we could put some cute little ears, a little curly tail and paint pink a 500 KT nuclear weapon and drop it on their asses! Good bye forever, Haji!

  • IndependantConservative

Give the poor dog a sweater, at least! He’s got to be very cold with all that wind.

  • Tom of Wales

Man’s best friend at work, you gotta love that. Dogs are special andthrough many wars they have been at out soldiers side. Besides that, I would rather be with a dog than any lib!

    • http://www.bootparkergriffith.com The Sentinel at the Gate

My dog is trained to “ferret” out libs and bite them. His name is Reagan.

  • Minuteman01

Fill up Afghanistan with wild man-eating boar! That’s the ticket!

  • Attila

There are some things that even a pig won’t eat.

  • skydivejnky

My son always wanted to jump with his dog, but strapping an 80lb Old English Sheepdog onto the front of you is not easy. We would take the dog out to the LZ and he absolutely loved watching the jumpers land, it was all you could do to hold him back from running out to greet them.

  • B. A.

i guess it’s not a secret anymore.

  • Tyler520

That dog does not look particularly excited or happy.

It would be great to simply let loose packs of attack dogs into hostile cities and sit back and watch the fun

    • http://www.usobserver.com -osgo-

Yes, we already have ‘em, they’re called Recon Marines…

  • EL GONZO

Can we train pit bulls and drop them 24/7 around the White House? One of them is liable to penetrate……
