To put it in intellectual terms, Howard Stern, being a libertarian, has woken up to the facts that the Democrats are now some kind of socialist (broadly defined to include communist and fascist varieties), that such socialism is incompatible with individual liberty and that the last thing he should be doing as a libertarian is to vote Democrat.
