“I’m Not Sure What It Is”: Slaughter Concerned After Brick Is Thrown Through Her Window

After a brick was thrown through a window in her district office in Niagara Falls, N.Y., Friday morning, House Rules Chairwoman Louise Slaughter (D) said she is troubled by the protests surrounding the health care reform debate.

“I’m not sure what it is,” she said. “I’ll tell you this, though, I know I’m concerned.”

She said there’s no confirmation that the incident happened as a result of the ongoing Congressional debate, but police in her home state are investigating.

Slaughter said the scene on Capitol Hill today — where Reps. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and John Lewis (D-Ga.) were peppered with racial and anti-gay slurs and Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) was spit on — coupled with the broken window gave her pause.

Slaughter gained national attention this week for the “Slaughter Solution,” a procedure that would have potentially allowed House Members to forgo a vote on the Senate health care reform bill but still deem it passed.

The Rules Committee this afternoon agreed to drop the procedure as a means to pass the bill.
