BTW, I just checked an earthquake frequency research report. Listing all seismic activity (which includes very minor events), there were 4800 events recorded in 1973. From there the frequency increased to 30,000 in 2006, and still climbing.
And this chart shows the frequency of earthquakes of magnitude 6.99 or greater:
