WASHINGTON (AP) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is skipping President Barack Obama’s nuclear security summit, which he had originally accepted the President’s invitation to, and was attending next week.
An official with the Israeli government tells The Associated Press that a deputy prime minister will attend in Netanyahu’s place. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.
Another person briefed on the change in Netanyahu’s plans tells the AP that the Israeli government is concerned that some countries, particularly Egypt and Turkey, would seek to turn the summit into an anti-Israel event.
Obama organized the gathering of more than 40 countries to discuss how to prevent nuclear material from falling into the wrong hands.
